Aerospace

The Department of Aerospace Engineering (College of Engineering) at Michigan (U-M) prides itself on being the first department to have taught the Aeronautics program in the US in 1914. Ever since, it has been at the heart of the USA's aeronautical prowess, playing a significant part in various missions. Undergraduate students opting for Aerospace majors are awarded a BSE degree and another bachelor's degree often being in a related field such as mechanical engineering. The department offers MSE to engineering bachelors. Another sought after program is the MEng in Space Engineering which is the perfect combination of theoretical and practical learning. As the course seeks to provide interdisciplinary education in scientific, management, and engineering dimensions of space systems, it helps students to refine their disciplinary skills and familiarizes them with systems education and management fields. The Ph.D. program is fully funded. The research focus of the department is on Hypersonic Vehicles and Space Systems among others.

Biomedical

Biomedical is one of the largest BME graduate programs in the U.S. The department has awarded more graduate degrees than any other BME department in the country. The University of Michigan is one of the only universities in the country with top-ranked engineering, medical, and business schools on the same campus. A $20 million research endowment was sown by The Wallace H. Coulter Foundation (Coulter Translational Research Program). It supports research in technologies that helps in progress towards commercial development and clinical practice. Currently, there are 27 faculty members, 21 with full-time BME appointment.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers BSE in three concentrations; Biomechanical, Biochemical, Bioelectrical. In addition, an integrated 5 years BSE and MSE are also offered by the department. The Department of Chemical Engineering prides itself in strengthening the core areas of chemical engineering while also expanding the frontiers of emerging trends like chip-based DNA sequencing, green chemistry, etc. It offers BSE with few electives including BioPharmaceutical Engineering; Electrical Engineering – Electronic Devices; Energy Systems Engineering; Environmental Engineering; Life Sciences; Materials Science and Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Nuclear Engineering; Petroleum and Gas Exploration and dual BSE/MSE combined with other departments. The MSE program for graduates is research-based and aimed at problem-solving. Some of the compulsory courses under the MSE program are fluid flow, statistical and irreversible thermodynamics, chemical reactor engineering, transport processes, and so on. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering focuses on Water Systems, Informatics, Human Infrastructure Engineering, and Interdependent Systems Engineering to set new benchmarks in technical education in the US. The department offers a BSE in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering. They may choose to opt for sequential BSE/MSE. Industrial Engineering and Operations Engineering Department

The Industrial and Operations Engineering Department at U-M offers an interdisciplinary BSE with emphasis on Computer and Information Processing; Ergonomics; Management Engineering; Manufacturing Engineering; Operations Research; Quality Engineering that brings together relevant courses from business, social sciences, economics and medical sciences. It concentrates on analysis and operations of industrial systems. Materials Science

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is known for finding solutions to some of the most pressing problems. It is the same spirit and approach towards which its programs are geared. Interdisciplinary approach that brings together pure sciences, CS, engineering and industry together and a wide range of materials in focus for study made the department rank 2nd in the US for undergraduate materials science program. Besides BSE, the department also offers MSE with a wide range of courses crafted according to latest industry needs. Five focus areas of research include Structural Materials, Biomaterials, Nano-materials, Computational Materials, and Electronic Materials. The department receives training and funding from the Department of Defense and Department of Education of US government.
