UniSA's School of Engineering incorporates strong theoretical teaching, and experience-based learning, including 12-week work placement and state-of-the-art facilities, to offer the ideal academic blend to produce graduates who are ready to meet the challenges of the modern industry. The School offers a range of professional programs that prepare students for rewarding careers in mechanical, mechatronic, civil and electrical engineering.

The School offers a wide range of programs and courses in a supportive and encouraging environment with more than 80 staff members and over 2000 students. It participates in state-of-the-art teaching, academic education, and fundamental applied research in world-class teaching facilities on the Mawson Lakes campus.

    Undergraduate Courses

    UniSA's undergraduate engineering studies, ranked top 10 in Australia for Engineering and Technology, combine theoretical teaching with experience-based learning. With 12 weeks of industry experience, students develop practical skills and are given access to first-class facilities.

    This aims at fostering students with the skills to work in modern businesses in an innovative and sustainable way. Students can choose from undergraduate specialisations in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. All four-year degrees of engineering include a year of honors and are accredited by Engineers Australia. There is also an option for students to double their opportunities by undertaking a Combined Degree program that allows the simultaneous study of two undergraduate degrees within a shorter duration.

    The Undergraduate Degrees Include - 
    Associate Degree in Engineering where students prepare for a professional career in civil, mechanical, mechatronic, electrical engineering or surveying.

    Postgraduate Courses

    1. Master of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure)

    Civil and structural engineers focus on building design and construction, bridges and other infrastructure structural components. A Master of Engineering degree helps students develop sophisticated skills in engineering research methods and project management which are used in major civil engineering design projects.

    It is also necessary to complete the master thesis. Here, students study advanced topics in structural and geotechnical engineering and upon the completion of the degree, apply for job opportunities as a project manager in engineering consulting companies, construction firms and local, state and federal government; operations manager; civil engineering or structural engineering. It is a two-year program. 

    2. Master of Engineering (Water Resources Management)

    The Master's degree is a thesis program that allows students to learn concepts of water and environmental engineering to deal with all-important waterways resources and infrastructure. They develop capabilities unique to the civil engineering water field. Here, in order to advance expertise and career opportunities, teaching and learning are supported by world-class engineering research and industry experience.  There is an ideal educational mix for students which allow them to address the demands of a modern enterprise.

    The programme provides strong theoretical training, experience-based learning and cutting-edge facilities. Upon graduating, students seek job opportunities in engineering consulting firms, construction companies, and local, state and federal government as project manager, operations manager or water resources engineer. It is a two-year program. 

    3. Master of Engineering (Engineering Management)

    This master's degree aligns learning with professional practice. Students apply the theory and skills gained in their own field of interest to a specific industry project or to a minor thesis linked to a research institution associated with the School of Engineering. Students gain advanced knowledge and skills in operations management, total quality management, supply chain management, enterprise resource planning, automation, energy and society, and project management.

    To help advance your expertise and career opportunities, learning is supported by world-class engineering research and industry experience. Students find job opportunities in engineering consulting firms, construction companies, and local, state and federal government as Energy Manager, Operations Manager, Quality assurance manager or Business development engineer. It is a two-year program. 

    4. Master of Engineering (Electrical Power)

    This master's degree offers an opportunity to study advanced topics in electrical power systems such as the operation and control of modern power systems; renewable and distributed generation of energy; and advanced electrical machine modeling. Students in this field have been working on projects on industry-related renewable energy and their storage (such as designing and optimizing microgrid solutions) and on issues related to the optimization of electrical power systems (such as protection, optimum capacity and power factor compensation placement).

    For highly qualified engineers, there is a wide range of career options. They could work in renewable energy systems (wind farms and solar), power transmission or power distribution, or in the manufacturing industry to support major consumers of electrical energy. Careers to consider include energy researcher, engineering operations manager, renewable energy research and development. It is a two-year program. 

    5. Master of Engineering (Telecommunications)

    The master's degree helps students to conduct research in specialized topics related to wireless and mobile communication systems, information theory and coding, and networks of telecommunications. UniSA's research environment, dynamic teaching and student research base strongly support it. Students have focused on industry-related projects such as indoor localization based on visible light communications; digital signal processing applied to a range of practical issues (such as a radar-based vehicle collision preventive system); and various aspects of the Internet of Things.

    The Institute for Telecommunications Research (ITR) is an internationally recognized research organization focused on four main areas: satellite communications, high-speed data communications, flexible radios and networks, and computational and theoretical neuroscience. There are prospects for jobs in engineering consulting firms, construction companies, and local, state and federal government as Network planning manager, operations management maintenance, or telecommunications research and development. The program is for two years. 

    6. Master of Science in Sustainable Energy Systems

    According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the world demand for electricity will increase by 70% by 2040, driven primarily by the emerging economies of India, China, Africa, the Middle East and South-East Asia. With the rising energy demand, emerging disruptive technologies, potential fuel supply issues, and the need to transition to a low-carbon future, re-evaluating current energy systems and shifting towards a more effective and sustainable model is critical.  

    This innovative course, delivered in a dual-hemisphere mode, offers the opportunity to study in both the UK and Australia while providing different viewpoints on the global energy sector. The purpose of this 18-month program is to provide you with a rigorous and comprehensive understanding of contemporary theory and practice in the global energy industry's sustainable management.

    This journey begins with courses on Geopolitics, Law, Renewable Energy and Resource Development at UCL in London, providing the global energy sector with an overarching background. Then the move to UniSA in Adelaide will involve studying courses in Energy Management and Conservation, Energy Economics, Energy Projects and Social License to Operate.

    Students also pursue a six-month, industry-experienced academic research project. They graduate with a broad understanding of energy systems and how to develop them in a long-term sustainable way to meet the growing global demand.
