    Material Science

Materials Engineering is about designing, processing, testing and discovering materials mainly solids. It involves analyzing the structure and properties of objects.Virginia Tech offers a four-year B.S. in Materials Science & Engineering. Similar to all engineering subjects, all students enter the MSE Department following the completion of their first-year studies within the College of Engineering, as administered by the Department of Engineering Education (EngE).

The Graduate School offers a Master of Science (M. S), a Master of Engineering (M. Eng.) and a Ph.D. program

The M.S. degree requires a thesis. Students with an interest in applied research and development should consider this degree option. The M.Eng. is a non-thesis degree which is obtained through coursework and a project focusing on a critical literature review or industry problem.

The Ph.D. degree is intended for exceptional students who have a strong interest in scholarship and a desire to do independent research. A master's degree is neither a requirement nor a prerequisite for students to apply for a Ph.D. program.
