Founded in 1974, Deakin University is the eighth largest university in Australia (in terms of students strength).

Situated in the state of Victoria, Deakin has four large campuses and an online cloud campus.

    Deakin campuses have plenty of accommodation on offer. It is generally advisable for international students to stay on campus. However, if you choose to live off-campus, Deakin’s HouseMe website provides a database of local houses available on rent, near each campus.

    There are a lot of options available if you do choose to live on campus. For example, you could choose to live in a studio apartment by yourself or share a two bed-roomed apartment with another person. Or if the budget is a constraint, you could choose to share a four -five - or six-bedroom shared apartment with other students. In all of these, you will have your own private bedroom or shared bathrooms, a fully-equipped, large, open-planned kitchen, lounge and dining area.

    The approximate costs of accommodation for international students depend on the choice of housing - Hostels and Guesthouses - $90 to $150 per week, Shared Rental - $95 to $215 per week, On-campus - $110 to $280 per week and Homestay - $235 to $325 per week.

    In addition, other than accommodation, the living expenses would approximately have the following break-up: Groceries and eating out - $80 to $280 per week, Gas, electricity - $35 to $140 per week, Phone and Internet - $20 to $55 per week, Public transport - $15 to $55 per week, Car (after purchase) - $150 to $260 per week and Entertainment - $80 to $150 per week.This official Australian Government site is an excellent reference site to calculate costs you would incur while studying in Deakin.

    Deakin University Location

    1. Melbourne Burwood Campus - The main campus of the university, that is, the Melbourne Burwood campus, is 30 minutes from the mountains of the Dandenong Ranges, the beaches of St Kilda and Melbourne's bustling central district. If one is to take Melbourne CBD, getting to the campus would take one hour using the combinations of train, tram and bus. However, trams would provide you with the direct journey, Take the 75 tram from Stop 4 (Flinders Street) to Stop 63 (Deakin University/Burwood Highway).

    Apart from these, a Deakin shuttle bus – route 201 – provides frequent services from Box Hill bus port and train station. An easy-to-use Myki card is required to use trams, trains, and buses. This campus is 40 km from Melbourne airport, and it takes one and a half hours from the airport to reach the campus. Take a taxi or the Skybus from the airport terminal to Spencer St. Take a tram from there.

    2. Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus - Geelong is around 95 km from Melbourne. Driving takes approximately one hour. You could also take a train from Southern Cross station in Melbourne. The time taken is around one hour and thirty minutes.

    3. Geelong Waterfront Campus - The drive from Melbourne is around 90 km and takes an hour. The train takes an hour to reach this campus.

    4. Warrnambool Campus - This campus is situated on the banks of the Hopkins river about 5 km from the centre of the coastal city of Warrnambool. Warrnambool is approximately 260 km from Melbourne, and driving would take about 3 and a half hours. Other options are taking a train from Melbourne Southern Cross Station, and the journey takes around 3 hrs 45 minutes. You could also fly from Melbourne. The flight is 1 hour 15 minutes long.
