Brief background

Lamar University was founded in 1923 with just 125 students on board. The university has developed a lot since its existence in terms of education and number of students as well. It showed great growth during 1950-1960 in terms of admissions and infrastructure. Lamar University came under the Texas State University System in 1995 which again lead to the growth of the university in terms of financial aid and comfortable campus life.

Infrastructure 

Lamar University is home to more than 2,500 students who live inside the premises of the campus with furnished residence halls, living areas, and recreational sports center. The huge campus of Lamar University is comprised of eight-storey Mary and John Gray Library and Provost Umphrey Stadium that can seat up to 16,000 students. Students can also visit the Dishman Art Museum which is within the campus and offers an opportunity to the students to experience the various styles of art and also they get a chance to exhibit their own work. 

Residing Options 

The residential life within the campus for the students is cost-effective and safe. The students get an opportunity to attend various campus events and access faculty easily for academic assistance. Lamar's Civil Engineering is an excellent programme earning graduates an average annual salary of $86,640.

Home to over 15,000 learners, Lamar University is one of Texas' fastest-growing colleges and universities. It is situated near Houston in Beaumont, TX, and is a part of The Texas State University System. Over 100 research programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees are offered by LU. The Beaumont 292-acre campus is approximately 90 miles east of Houston and approximately 25 miles west of Louisiana. Jack Brooks Regional Airport (BPT/ KBPT) is the nearest main airport to Lamar University. This airport is located in Beaumont, Texas, 8 miles from Lamar University's core. The university campus can be readily accessed from the airport via multiple buses, night buses, rental cars, town vehicles, and shuttle services.
The University also has its own shuttle service which during a periodic semester works seven days a week. The shuttle offers daily transportation within a two-mile radius for learners and offers weekend trips to Wal-Mart. Students are taken to multiple places such as halls of residence, apartments, and shopping malls.
Riding bicycles is a pollution-free mode of transport that decreases the need for car construction, service, and disposal. Compared to private motor cars and government transport, it is a cost-effective mode of transport. Many learners ride motorcycles on campus. In front of Gentry Hall, the campus has a bicycle repair rack and identifies bicycle routes across the campus.

Chemical

The Dan F. Smith Department of Chemical Engineering provides programmes in the discipline of Chemical Engineering that combine chemistry, physics and engineering. This combination goes on to solve problems involving the use or production of chemicals to develop new materials and processes, to increase efficiency and lower cost. The degrees offered by the department are Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering; Master of Engineering (M.E.) (non-thesis); Master of Engineering Science (M.E.S) (thesis) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The undergraduate students and faculty in the chemical engineering department work in all areas of chemical engineering including chemical process systems, biochemicals, petrochemicals, renewable energy, and nanotechnology. The university is located in Beaumont, Texas, home to four refineries and many chemical plants. Lamar University College of Engineering offers three graduate degree programs with a concentration in Chemical Engineering. The Master’s degrees with a concentration in Chemical Engineering deepen knowledge about various aspects of chemical engineering. The students have the opportunity to conduct research and contribute something new to the field by conducting experiments and taking part in research publications. The Ph.D. degree is designed to prepare chemical engineers to advance research, development, and education so that they can address national and global challenges with a highly sustainable industrial-based focus on petroleum, petrochemical and allied industries.

Civil and Environmental

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department provides its Civil Engineers with the opportunity to participate in a broad spectrum of operations such as studies, design, growth, management, and control of engineering systems and parts. In addition to numerous graduate degrees, the department offers undergraduate degrees. The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering enables faculty members and undergraduates to conduct studies in all fields of Civil Engineering including Structures, Geotechnical, Transportation Systems, Environmental Systems, Construction, and Water Treatment while focusing on creating environmentally sound systems. There are two master’s degree plans: Master of Science in Environmental Engineering and Environmental Studies. The department also offers 3 additional graduate plans - Master of Engineering (non-thesis); Master of Engineering Science (thesis) and Doctor of Engineering. The graduate students engage in practical initiatives in the different areas of civil and environmental engineering such as continuing collaborations with the Transportation Department of Texas, Sabine-Neches Navigation, Port of Houston, and other industry partners. It also provides a mixed program to enable learners to obtain their Bachelor of Civil Engineering Science and Master of Environmental Engineering or Environmental Studies in just under 5 years. During the senior year of undergraduate studies, there is a flexibility to start taking courses towards a master's degree. The Master of Engineering non-thesis program is designed to meet the practitioner's needs in the discipline, while the Master of Engineering Science with a thesis option program prepares students in their selected engineering disciplines to develop solutions independently.

Computer Science 

The Computer Science Department encompasses every aspect of human endeavor - popular techniques such as mobile phones, artificial intelligence, medical imaging, and game design and development. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' predictions suggests that jobs such as a Software Engineer, Database Administrator, Network Security Analyst, and Software Architect are likely to be among the most expanding professions over the next century. Lamar's Computer Science program focuses on computer programming languages, data structures, information systems, programming language theory, software engineering, networking, database, multimedia, computer science apps, and computer architecture. Students can also investigate levels in bioinformatics in computer science and the creation of games in computer science. The department offers many bachelor’s degrees and minor programs which include: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science; Bachelor degree in Computer Information Systems; Bachelor degree in Cyber Security; B.S. in Computer Game Development; Minor in Computer Science; Minor in Computer and Information Science; minor in Multimedia and Web Technology; Game Design and development (Certificate). The graduate classes include MS in Computer Science and a graduate certificate in Cybersecurity. The MS Curriculum is intended to prepare learners for networking, database design, and smart systems careers. There are choices for both thesis and non-thesis programs. To put graduates at the forefront of technical excellence, a combination, of course, laboratory and study work in the program is intended. The 'Cybersecurity' certificate program enables individuals to work as system /network/data/web/app analysts or developers in various jobs industries including IT, finance, government, army, production, e-commerce, transportation, retail, health care, insurance, education, and environmental management.

Electrical / Electronics

The Phillip M. Drayer Department of Electrical Engineering Department ranks 5th in the US for engineering in terms of return on investment. It provides a bachelor degree program in which faculty and students operate in all fields of electrical engineering including Electronics, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, Power & Energy, Instrumentation & Control and Robotics. The Electrical Engineering Department provides two undergraduate (Instrumentation & Control) and graduate (Power & Energy) certificate programs. The department also provides three graduate degrees:  Master of Engineering, Master of Engineering Science, and Doctor of Engineering. With the exception of the Masters of Engineering degree, the graduate degrees require each student to pursue research in an area of their choice. Computer Engineering; Power & Energy; Robotics, Instrumentation & Control are the specialization tracks offered in the master’s level courses. In addition, the Power & Energy Certificate is intended to cover industry needs including the design and execution of electrical devices and power electronic drives, power generation unit dynamics control, energy system tracking and security, energy system modeling and intelligent grid concept. The Department of Industrial Engineering provides a distinctive experience on campus. It deals with individuals, finance, data, and the environment. The department provides a bachelor's degree in science along with multiple master's degrees and a doctoral degree in engineering. Undergraduates have many learning opportunities including research and education abroad. Students from the department have interned with major national firms including UPS, GE, Invista, Dupont, Toyota, Delta, BASF, Bell as well as local businesses in the chemical, production, paper and steel sectors. The department also provides a five-year academic program leading to two degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and a Master of Business Administration (MBA), in which students will be able to complete their B.S. in Industrial Engineering and MBA within five years by completing certain electives and engineering economics to satisfy the requirements of an MBA. The department offers the following graduate degrees: Master of Engineering Management (MEM), Master of Engineering with a concentration in Industrial Engineering (Non-Thesis), Master of Engineering Science with a concentration in Industrial Engineering (Thesis), Doctor of Engineering with a concentration in Industrial Engineering, Master of Science in Port and Terminal Management (MPTM).
The Doctor of Engineering degree is intended to allow the practitioner to study the complicated nature of practical engineering issues.
