The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious scholarships for international students. It is a fully-funded scholarship for international students studying at the University of Oxford. Full-time students of postgraduate courses at Oxford are eligible to apply for the Rhodes Scholarship.

What are the benefits of the Rhodes scholarship?

Apart from the scholarship amount, the scholarship covers most of your living expenses in the UK. The following are the primary funding areas of the scholarship:

  • list items The Rhodes Scholarship covers Oxford University course fees and provides an annual stipend.
  • list items For the 2022/23 academic year, the stipend is £18,180 per annum (£1,515 per month).

    What are the eligibility criteria for the Rhodes scholarship?

    The major eligibility requirements for the Rhodes Scholarship are given below. Applicants can also use the eligibility checker tool the University of Oxford provides.

    To be eligible for the Rhodes Scholarship in India, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    Nationality/citizenship:

  • list items Applicants must be citizens of India, holding an Indian passport or equivalent proof of citizenship.
  • list items PIO or OCI card holders are not eligible for this scholarship.
  • list items Applications from refugees/asylum seekers in India will be considered.
  • Education/residency:

  • list items Applicants must have completed at least four years of formal study at an educational institution in India within the last ten years.
  • list items Applicants must have either completed a school leaving exam (10th or 12th standard or equivalent) at a school in India, or be in the final year of, or have completed an undergraduate degree at a university in India.
  • Age:

    Applicants must either be at least 18 years old and not have reached their 24th birthday on 1 October 2022 or Not have reached their 27th birthday on 1 October 2022 and have met or will meet the academic requirements for completing their first undergraduate degree on or after 1 October 2021.

    Academic achievement:

  • list items Applicants must have completed, or will have completed by July, an undergraduate degree with an academic background and grade that meets or exceeds the specific entry requirements of their chosen full-time course at the University of Oxford.
  • list items Having a First Class Honours Degree will increase the chances of successful admission to Oxford.

  • list items Only one scholarship (and in exceptional cases, two) may be awarded to candidates who pursued their undergraduate studies at a university outside India or inter-jurisdictional candidates.

  • list items School leaving examinations: You must provide official transcripts or marksheets from your 10th and 12th standard (or equivalent) school/junior college/pre-university college leaving board examinations.
  • list items Evidence of study in India: If you are not a graduate of a university located in India or in the final year of undergraduate study at a university located in India, you must provide evidence of formal study at an educational institution in India for at least 4 of the last 10 years as of the date of application and completion of a school leaving exam at a school/junior college/pre-university college in India (either 10th or 12th standard or equivalent).

  • list items Curriculum vitae: You must provide a CV that includes details about your academic qualifications, prizes, scholarships, positions of leadership, employment positions, involvement in student, voluntary, community or political activities, and any cultural, musical or sporting accomplishments. Your CV should not exceed two A4 (12pt font size) pages in length and should not include a photograph.
  • list items Photograph: You need to provide a head-and-shoulders color photograph in jpg format.
  • list items Personal statement: You must submit a personal statement of no more than 750 words that addresses the three prompts provided. This is your opportunity to tell your story in your own voice, and to provide an overarching narrative for the selection committee.

    How to get selected for the Rhodes scholarship?

    The selection process involves multiple rounds of interviews. Once the application is reviewed, candidates are longlisted for a preliminary interview in person or via video conference. It may be followed by a semi-final interview at the selection committee's discretion. The shortlisted candidates for the final interview will be invited for a social engagement, like a tea or dinner party, hosted by the committee's chairman.
