ACT Scoring 2026: How the Composite Works

  • list items
Each section's raw score is converted to a scale score so results have the same meaning across all ACT test forms, regardless of test date.
  • list items
Your composite score is the average of your English, math, and reading scores, rounded to the nearest whole number.
  • list items
Section scores run on a 1–36 scale, including the optional Science section.
  • list items
The optional Writing test is scored on a 2–12 scale as the sum of two domain scores.
  • list items
Students also receive STEM scores (the average of math and science) and ELA scores (the average of English, reading, and writing, if taken).

What counts as a good score? Per ACT, a good ACT score is one that meets or exceeds the average score of students admitted to the colleges you're applying to. As a benchmark, the national average ACT Composite score was 19.4 in 2024. ACT's own banding indicates that scores of 24–28 are strong for more selective colleges, and 30–36 are widely accepted at top-tier schools.

Superscoring: Your Superscore is the average of your highest section scores across all ACT test dates, and many colleges accept Superscores, so every retest is another chance to raise individual sections. For test-takers since September 2016, ACT automatically creates a Superscore using your highest English, math, and reading section scores.

ACT for UG Admission

The ACT for UG Admission is one of the most widely used undergraduate entrance tests, taken by over 2 million students every year. For Indian students applying abroad, it matters because:

  • list items
It is accepted for bachelor's admissions across the US, Canada, and beyond.
  • list items
It offers an alternative to the SAT, and both exams are accepted equally, with scores comparable through official concordance tables developed by ACT and the College Board.
  • list items
ACT defines readiness through its benchmarks: scores indicating a 50% chance of earning a B or higher (or about a 75% chance of a C or higher) in corresponding first-year college courses.

ACT Preparation 2026: Study Strategy

ACT provides official preparation routes including free ACT practice tests, official prep and subject guides, and the Official ACT Self-Paced Course. Build your ACT Preparation 2026 plan around these.

ACT's own test-day strategy guidance:

  • list items
Pace yourself. Divide the remaining minutes by the number of questions to estimate time per question, and use leftover time to review.
  • list items
Answer easy questions first. Answer the easy questions and skip the difficult ones, then return to the harder ones if time remains.
  • list items
Use logic on harder questions. Eliminate as many incorrect answers as you can, then make an educated guess from the rest.
  • list items
Answer every question. Scores are based only on questions answered correctly; there is no penalty for guessing.
  • list items
Review your work, since you cannot return to a section once time has been called.

After testing, ACT My Answer Key lets you review which questions you got right, wrong, or skipped, so you can target weak areas before a retest.
