The SAT exam pattern 2026 has two sections, each split into two modules. The following table shows the structure:
| Section | Number of Questions | Allotted Time |

There is a 10-minute break between the Reading and Writing section and the Math section. The Digital SAT 2026 is section-adaptive: the first module of each section contains a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions, and your performance there determines whether the second module is more or less difficult.
Reading and Writing: Short passages (or passage pairs), each followed by a single multiple-choice question, across four domains - Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions, and Expression of Ideas. Passages range from 25 to 150 words and cover literature, history/social studies, the humanities, and science.
Math: Four categories - Algebra (13–15 questions), Advanced Math (13–15), Problem-Solving and Data Analysis (5–7), and Geometry and Trigonometry (5–7). Questions are a mix of multiple-choice and student-produced responses, and about 30% are set in real-world contexts.
SAT scores range from 400 to 1600, the sum of two section scores:
Important points about SAT scoring:
(Score expectations vary by university and program, always check the official admissions page of your target school.)
So, what is the SAT exam actually measuring? It assesses the reading, writing, and math skills considered most important for college readiness, rather than knowledge of any single subject. The Math section focuses on the areas of math that play the biggest role in college and career success, while Reading and Writing tests comprehension, analysis, vocabulary in context, and command of standard English conventions.
Popular study destinations including the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and several others accept SAT scores for undergraduate admissions. The SAT is most widely used and expected in the United States.
SAT slots can be booked online through your College Board account. Before test day, you must download the Bluebook app and complete exam setup on your device; you will then receive an admission ticket to bring on test day. After signing in, you can search for the nearest test centre and available dates.
Effective SAT preparation 2026 starts with College Board's official resources. The Bluebook app offers full-length adaptive practice tests, and Official Practice Tests 7 through 10 have replaced the older tests 1–3, which no longer reflect current difficulty. Khan Academy provides free official SAT practice as well.
Because the test is adaptive, always practice inside Bluebook rather than on paper, it's the only way to rehearse the real interface.
