New York University is a private university in New York City that was founded in 1831 by a group of New Yorkers led by then-Treasury Secretary Albert Gallatin. When it comes to world university rankings, New York University has consistently improved its standing.

The university was placed 35 in the QS World University Ranking, which puts the most weight to academic reputation. This is a significant improvement from its previous rankings of 46 in 2017 and 52 in 2018. In the last four years, Times Higher Education (THE) has ranked the university among the top 30 in the world, based on teaching and research repute. Times Higher Education has ranked New York University as number 26 in 2021, up from number 32 in 2017.
