Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering

A biomedical engineer tries to find replacements for damaged human body parts using new technologies. The UNSW Biomedical Engineering team provides highly coveted education programs and useful research programs that help save lives around the world.

  • Undergraduate Degrees Offered
    • The department offers a Masters degree concurrently with an undergraduate bachelor degree in one of nine specialisations. Students can complete both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years.
  • Postgraduate Degrees Offered
    • Master of Engineering Science - You are eligible for this program if you have a Bachelors in Engineering. It runs for a duration of 4 years and requires you to complete a total of 96 credits. There is also an extra research component which helps students to build their practical and analytical skills along with their theoretical knowledge.
    • Master of Biomedical Engineering - The course gives a choice between anatomy and physiology. The option for an additional research project will depend on your academic performance. This course has a total of 72 credits.
  • Labs- The department houses labs like Psychophysics Lab, Implantable Bionics Research Lab, Biochemical Laboratory, Electronics design lab, etc.

School of Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineers try to mould the various systems and equipment used in chemical, biological, medical processes to make them more efficient as per the current industry needs. Chemical Engineers find employment in a wide range of industries.

    • Master of Engineering (Chemical Process Engineering) - If you are interested in project design and analysis of chemical plants, industrial processes, and general operations in the chemical industry, this course is for you. It is a two-year full-time course, and it allows you a 50% credit if you have a degree or professional experience in any related area. 
    • Master of Engineering Science (Food Process Engineering) - Under this course, you will study about the various factors that affect the science, physical properties and engineering of different foods, shelf-life, thermal processing and life cycle of plants. The course also teaches about the different challenges faced by the food industry.  This is also a two-year full-time course. 
    • Master of Food Science - The course deals with advanced knowledge about the functioning of the food industry - food technology, product development, food processing and food quality. It is a two-year full-time course as well. 
    • The department also offers Doctor of Philosophy(Chemical Engineering, Food Science) and Master of Philosophy(Chemical Engineering, Food Science and Technology). 
  • Labs and Facilities - The department makes sure students and researchers get everything they need to help them learn and carry out the research programs effectively. Facilities like Pilot Plant, Polymer synthesis, Protein Analysis, Fat Analysis, Gas Chromatography, etc. are available. 
  • Faculty - The department has been blessed with passionate academic staff who possess an enormous knowledge in their respective fields and are willing to spread it among their students. 
  • Industry - The department develops strong links with industry to understand the present needs better. Hence, their research is linked to real-world problems. The UNESCO Centre for Membrane Science under this department was linked to a prominent company which is now a part of the Siemens Water Systems. Other prominent industry partners are Bluescope Steel, Sydney Water, Veolia, etc.

School of Civil and Environmental Engineering

This is the largest school under UNSW Engineering and is recognized as the best in Australia. It holds its position among the top 20 in the world.

    • Master of Engineering Science - It is a two-year-long, full-time course. If you have a degree or professional experience in any of the related areas, you can apply for 50% of the total credit point. You can choose any one of the following specialisations: 
    • Civil Engineering: The course mainly focuses on project management, transport engineering, water and wastewater, surveying and construction. 
    • Environmental Engineering: It helps its students to build analytical skills in sustainable urban infrastructure. 
    • Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering geology: This course explores the depths of geotechnical theory and tries to solve real-world problems in soil mechanics, rock mechanics, slope stability, foundation design, earthworks and dam engineering.
    • Project Management: It deals with the fundamentals and applications of Project Management including planning, risk, contracts, people, equipment, materials, legal, finance and economics.
    • Structural Engineering: Students taking up this course work towards developing skills in computational analysis and design of steel, and reinforced composite and prestressed concrete structures. 
    • Sustainable Systems: The course covers areas like Sustainable Systems Engineering, industrial ecology, sustainability and environmental sciences, and sustainability management.
    • Transport Engineering: You study about transport planning, ITS and land use and risk management and safety, network design, demand estimation and sustainability, emissions and health. It is aimed at developing skills in modelling and analysing systems for every kind of transport. 
    • Water Engineering(Catchments to Coast): The course focuses on areas like surface water hydrology, urban hydrology and stormwater management, catchment and water resources modelling, groundwater investigations, and hydrodynamics of rivers and estuaries. It also includes Coastal Engineering related to waves, beaches and infrastructure.
    • Water, Wastewater and Waste Engineering: The course teaches its students about current and future technologies for water usage, wastewater treatment and waste disposal.
    • Master of Engineering: It is accredited with Engineers Australia. It runs for a duration of two years and also includes an industry training component. The course requires you to complete a total of 96 credit points. You can choose either of the following specialisations. 
    • Environmental Engineering: It focuses on safe, ecological, sustainable and ethical development of urban infrastructure.
    • Civil Engineering: It allows its students to involve themselves in projects aimed at improving the present living conditions of human beings. 
    • The department also offers Doctor of Philosophy. 
  • Faculty - The department has a total of 50 academic staff who are very dedicated to their work and have been recognized through many awards.

School of Computer Science and Engineering

It has been saving the 1st position for itself in Australia for Engineering/Technology and Computer Science since 2009. UNSW CSE has made its place in various Open Source and Linux groups around the world.

Electrical Engineering is concerned with the generation and transmission of electrical energy, radio waves, computers, biomedical technology, microelectronics and nanomachines. School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering 

The department has been providing world-class education in the field of Mechanical Engineering for more than sixty years. It is recognized as one of the most prestigious schools in Australia. An annual budget of $23 million is offered every year for education and research.

    • Mechanical Engineering - It deals with design, development, construction, operation and maintenance of machines, tools, plants and factories. It also includes power generation, propulsion and manufacture.
    • Manufacturing Engineering and Management - The program combines engineering, technology and management to provide its students with wholesome knowledge about product design, manufacture, sales and distribution. It also offers Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy. 
  • Faculty - The department has 80 passionate academic staff members. 
  • Industry - The school established two ARC Industry Transformation Training Centres, one for automated manufacturing of advanced composite and another for flame retardant and fire safety technologies. These help to build strong links with around 38 organizations around the world. 
  • Research - The main areas of research are Advanced Manufacturing, Advanced structure and materials, Advanced thermofluids, Aerodynamics and aerospace, Combustion and solar thermal energy, Robotics and Autonomous Systems, Wear, Aeroacoustics and Vibration in Engineering Systems. The school is about to start two research council training centres -  ARC Training Centre for Automated Manufacture of Advanced Composites (AMAC), ARC Training Centre for Fire Retardant Materials and Safety Technologies.

School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering

UNSW Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering has been ranked 8th in the world by the Academic Ranking of World Universities as of 2019. It has also been ranked 6th in the world by QS World University Rankings.

    • Master of Mine Geotechnical Engineering - This is also a 1.5-year course. The course includes hazard and risk management, mining geomechanics, geotechnical engineering, mining operations, etc. 
    • Master of Engineering Science - This course is two-years long. 
    • Petroleum Engineering - This course includes core principles and technologies associated with petroleum exploration and the production of oil and gas. It also helps the students to understand the socio-political context of the petroleum industry better. 
    • Geothermal Engineering - The course includes deeper knowledge in the field of geothermal energy which uses heat from the centre of the earth to generate sustainable energy. It does not offer industrial training. It also offers Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy. 
  • Faculty - The department has brilliant faculty members who have worked hard to make its place in the Shanghai Rankings which placed 14 subjects from UNSW in the top 50. 
  • Facilities - The department provides facilities like Tyree X-Ray and Australian Centre for Sustainable Mining Practices (ACSMP).
  • Research -  The main areas of research are Mining Geomechanics, Multiscale Transport System in porous systems, mining systems and mineral processing, sustainable mining practices, innovative learning and teaching, CO2 Geosequestration. 

School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering

UNSW is known for its research in the field of high-performance silicon solar cells. Photovoltaics is the science of turning sunshine into electricity using solar cells.

The department has a total of 45 undergraduate and 27 postgraduate programs and is the only one to offer a degree in Criminology and Social Work in Australia. They analyze every challenge that a city can face including environmental challenges. They offer quality education and research programs.
