The State University of New York at Buffalo is a public research university which has its campuses in Buffalo and Amherst, New York, United States. The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has a host of opportunities for potential undergraduates. One of their undergraduate offerings in the field of Aerospace Engineering is the four-year B.S in Aerospace Engineering. The department also offers an option where students can complete the requirements for both Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in one degree with the MAE Double Major. This is done by taking four additional courses. Typically, this double major course can be completed in four and a half years.
The Aerospace Engineering BS Program at UB is accredited by ABET, which involves a formal Outcomes Assessment and Continuous Improvement process to ensure educational excellence.
The department offers an M.S in Aerospace engineering. This course can be completed in 3-4 semesters (one and a half to two years). There are three options available:
- Thesis Option- A student is required to present a thesis.
- Project Option- A comprehensive typed report of a project of substantive length is required
- All - course Option.
In addition, it is possible for a student to complete a program leading to two MS degrees, for example, Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering degrees, or an Aerospace Engineering degree plus any other major from the engineering department. The Department also offers a Ph.D. degree in Aerospace Engineering. Students who already have a Master’s degree and are highly interested in research can pursue their Ph.D. degree by entering the Ph.D. program. Students with an outstanding academic record in the undergraduate years and a high level of interest in research can pursue their Ph.D. degree by directly entering the Ph.D. program. All students applying for the Doctorate program must have completed their GRE. Prestigious organizations such as NASA and Lockheed Martin have employed students from this department.
For Mechanical Engineering, the department offers a four-year B.S in Mechanical Engineering. (BSME). Students are offered to choose from two tracks to complete their BS. One is the Professional Practice track which gives students more exposure to business practices, communication. The other is Science and Mathematics track which is more technical in nature and suitable for students who wish to go into graduate school and academia.
The University at Buffalo School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the School of Management offer a five-year BS/MBA program leading to a combined Bachelor’s degree/Master’s degree in Business Administration. Students willing to pursue the joint-degree program should take the GMAT and apply to the MBA program early during their third year.
The M.S in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) is a graduate programme offered by the department. This course can be completed in 3-4 semesters (one and a half to two years). There are three options available - thesis, project, all-course.

The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering has two options as undergraduate degrees. One is the traditional four-year B.S in Chemical engineering. Another offering of the department is in conjunction with the UB School of Management, that is, the joint B.S/MBA- a five-year program leading to a joint bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and a master's degree in business administration. Students willing to pursue the joint-degree program should take the GMAT and apply to the MBA program early during their third year.
The BS degree in Chemical Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
The Department of Chemical Engineering offers M.S and M.E in Chemical engineering.
The M.S degree offered can be completed in one of three tracks:
- Thesis (24-months long, research-based)
- Project (24-months long, research-based)
- All Courses (12-months long, course-based)
The ME degree (18 – 24 months long) is a degree with an industrial focus. Students can choose one of four focus areas: Biotechnology; Modeling, Simulation, and Informatics; Chemistry and Processing of Materials; Energy and Sustainability
The department also offers a Chemical Engineering Ph.D. program. It allows doctoral students to conduct research in the areas of Biochemical and Biomedical Engineering, Nanoscale Science and Engineering and Computational Science and Engineering. The degree typically takes five years to complete.

The BS Computer Science program at UB provides a solid foundation in software development, computer science theory, and systems and offers students the flexibility to specialize in areas such as Machine Learning, Robotics, Databases, Data Mining, Distributed Systems, Networking, Data-Intensive Computing, and Computer Architecture.
The B.A offers students a solid foundation in software development, computer science theory, and systems and offers students the flexibility to complement their core computer science curriculum with a specialization outside Computer Science through an external concentration from the College of Arts and Sciences. The combined BS/MS program in Computer Science is a five-year course through which students can receive both a BS degree in Computer Science and an MS degree in Computer Science & Engineering.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering offers an M.S in Computer Science and Engineering. Students can opt for a thesis program or a project to satisfy the requirements for the Masters. Another offering of the department is M.S in Computational Linguistics in conjunction with The Departments of Linguistics. In addition, the department also offers Ph.D., MS in Geographic Information Science
For doctoral programs, the Department offers a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering.
The Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering caters to students desirous to pursue a career in academic or industrial research. Students with a master’s degree in computer science or computer engineering are normally admitted into the Ph.D. program. Students without such degrees are normally admitted into the MS program, though they may be admitted directly into the Ph.D. program upon the recommendation of the Graduate Admissions Committee.
The Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering offers a four-year B.S in Civil Engineering. Another excellent offering by this department in conjunction with the UB School of Management is the joint B.S/ MBA- a five-year program leading to a joint bachelor's degree in civil engineering and master's degree in business administration. Students willing to pursue the joint-degree program should take the GMAT and apply to the MBA program early during their third year.
Undergraduate degrees, the Department offers an M.S in Civil Engineering and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering. MS in Civil Engineering students may choose one of the following technical concentrations: Bridge Engineering; Computational Engineering Mechanics; Geomechanics, Geotechnical, and Geoenvironmental Engineering; and Structural and Earthquake Engineering.

The Department of Electrical Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), a four-year degree program. A 5-year Joint B.S/MBA provided by the department allows students to earn both BS in Electrical Engineering and MBA from UB School of Management. During their fourth and fifth years, students take a combination of MBA and EE courses. Therefore, students earn both degrees at the end of five years.
The M.S in Electrical Engineering is a graduate program offered by the department and can be completed within two years. It may be completed via two tracks:
By submitting a thesis - Each thesis must be successfully defended in an oral examination.
Comprehensive exam- Students are allowed two attempts to pass the MS Comprehensive Exam.
To qualify for admission to the MS program in Electrical Engineering offered by the department, a candidate must hold a bachelor's degree in engineering or any of the mathematical, physical, behavioral, or health sciences.
The department also offers Master of Engineering and Engineering Sciences MS with a focus on Internet of Things, Nanoelectronics and Clean Energy.
Students may be admitted to the Ph.D. program if they hold a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering or any of the mathematical, physical, behavioral, or health sciences. Those students who are admitted directly to the Ph.D. with a bachelor's degree will have the option to earn an MS degree during their course of study. The specializations offered in Ph.D. are: Signals, Communications, and Networking; Optics and Photonics; Solid State Electronics; and Energy Systems.
