Biological

The cutting-edge Biological Engineering program of Guelph focuses on the basics in the study of bio-materials, analysis of bio-systems, instrumentation and control systems. It offers graduate and undergraduate (Bachelor of Engineering) degrees. Research-study based, the Master of Applied Science (MASc) program is available for full-time as well as part-time study. The Master of Engineering program (MEng) provides two choices for its completion: the first is course-based, and the second is course-work plus a major research project.

The PhD program provides specialized engineering and experimental methods education through a combination of course work and independent research.

As a biological engineer, one can work in a wide range of fields including:

Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineers use engineering principles and technology to develop innovative ways to improve the quality of life and human health. Students study Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology along with Electronics, Mechanics and Computer Science courses in the programmes offered by the department. The department offers undergraduate and graduate level courses including a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Biomedical Engineering.

As Biomedical Engineers, students work in a variety of fields including medical equipment research and development, injury prevention and recovery, as well as diagnostic tools and treatment devices. The students also seek further training in biological engineering, mechanical engineering, or professional programs such as medicine or dentistry and prepare for the profiles of manufacturing engineer; medical researcher or physician.

Computer Engineering

Computer Engineering focuses on the science and techniques behind the development and maintenance of software and hardware components of modern computing systems. The department trains students to build successful and innovative technical systems and solutions by demonstrating the concepts of algorithmic, electronic, and digital technology.

The department offers a: Bachelor of Engineering with a minor in computer engineering, a Master of Applied Science (MASc), a Master of Engineering (MEng) and a PhD in graduate studies.

As computer engineering graduates, students may be involved in the design and construction of circuits, integration of hardware, and implementation of system-level design.

As computer engineers, one can work in a variety of fields in the technology industry including

Engineering Systems and Computing

Engineering Systems and Computing is a multidisciplinary field that blends the fundamentals of general technology with computer hardware and knowledge of code. This department is one of its kind in Canada focusing on the design of integrated computer-based engineering systems. It provides a combination of courses covering software development, computer hardware design, dynamics and transfer of power, signal processing and control of optimization. There are both undergraduate and graduate programmes offered by the department.

A Bachelor of Engineering programme with a major in Engineering Systems and Computing along with Master of Applied Science (MASc), Master of Engineering (MEng) and PhD courses are offered at the university. Students get the opportunity to work in a variety of fields and applications, including business, science and industry, as graduates of the university.

They work in software development, hardware design, signal processing, and system control and simulation in the private and public sectors, both locally and internationally, as Embedded Software Developer; Information Technology Specialist; Applications Designer and Wireless Systems Engineer.

Environmental Engineering

Guelph's Environmental Engineering Program provides in-depth knowledge of specific physical, chemical and biological processes with a strong focus on engineering design. It offers graduate and undergraduate (Bachelor of Engineering) degrees.

Research-thesis based, the Master of Applied Science (MASc) program is available on both full-time and part-time bases. The Master of Engineering program (MEng) offers two choices for studying the programme: the first is course-based and the second is course-work plus a major research project.

The PhD program provides specialized engineering and research methods training through a combination of course work and independent research. Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering program at the University of Guelph is designed to prepare its students for a challenging and rewarding career in this versatile field. This course emphasizes physics and Materials Science concepts for the analysis, development, manufacture, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It also includes insights on the manufacture and the use of heat and mechanical power for machine and tool design, processing and service.

Water Resources Engineering

Water Resources Engineering focuses on land and water resource utilization and management in rural and urban watersheds. It picks elements from other disciplines such as civil engineering, environmental engineering, agriculture, planning and geography and builds a unique combination that is ideally suited to address the concerns and needs of the society around water. Bachelor of Engineering with a major in Water Resources Engineering, Master of Applied Science (MASc), Master of Engineering (MEng) and PhD are the undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered at the University.

It also provides a Graduate Diploma program for Canadian engineering professionals who need further training to effect a shift in their professional career and recent immigrants with a background in engineering who are searching for Canadian educational qualifications.

The program strengthens these professionals' ability to gain jobs in the Water Resource Engineering field by helping them to gain specialized knowledge in either of the two water resource areas: Modeling Applications in Water Resource Systems and Design of Sustainable Water Resource Systems.

Computer Science

The School of Computer Science is made up of 26 faculty members who have under their supervision 45 MSc and 15 PhD students. Students develop skills at the School of Computer Science as they explore various course materials in the computer science area and across other disciplines. The course provides a strong hardware and theory base with special emphasis on applied code.

There are two majors available within the School of Computer Science: Computer Science and Software Engineering. The Application Area is special to the Computing Degree Bachelor. This allows students to study a secondary subject. Graduate studies at the School of Computer Science allow you to participate in groundbreaking research and prepare for industry or further studies.

Pure Sciences

1. The University of Guelph's Department of Chemistry offers a variety of courses which are geared towards the needs of today’s students. Students may extend their studies to physics, applied pharmacology, biological chemistry, or environmental monitoring and evaluation while maintaining a strong core of chemistry. It offers courses in chemistry for both undergraduates and graduates.

 The graduate programs on offer are Masters Program by Thesis, Masters Co-operative, Masters Full-Time Course-Based, Masters Part-Time Course-Based. Guelph University is a partner in the Guelph-Waterloo Center for Graduate Work in Chemistry and Biochemistry which requires chemistry graduate students studying at Guelph University to take graduate courses both at Guelph University and at Waterloo University.

2. The Mathematics and Statistics Department at the University of Guelph's College of Engineering and Physical Sciences is an involved and diverse team of scientists and educators working in a wide range of fields. It offers both undergraduate and graduate courses designed with an emphasis on mathematics and statistics applications and help prepare students for Mathematical Science careers.

It offers Mathematical Science Major, Minors and Diploma in Applied Statistics at the undergraduate level. For the purposes of graduate studies, the Diploma in Applied Statistics is considered equal to a Minor in Statistics. At the graduate level, it offers M.Sc. in Mathematics; M.Sc. in Statistics and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D). There is an option to complete the M.Sc. degree through a thesis or major research project.

3. The Department of Physics offers Bachelor, Master, Doctoral and Postdoctoral studies and teaching programs. Guelph faculty members work with a number of off-campus research institutions including CSA / NASA, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, the Canadian Light Source, and TRIUMF, as well as with the Advanced Analysis Center as a part of campus partnerships. The department offers Master of Science (MSc) Physics - Research-Based; Master of Science (MSc) Physics - Coursework; Master of Science (MSc) Biophysics.

4. The Molecular & Cellular Biology Department (MCB) offers a stimulating environment for students to pursue molecular bioscience graduate and undergraduate studies. The department provides B.Sc. degree and majors in biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology and genetics as well as neuroscience. Both the majors of Biochemistry and Microbiology offer a co-op choice. The graduate program in molecular and cellular biology offers attractive opportunities studies leading to Ph.D.,  M.Sc., and MBIOT degrees.
