The University of Houston was started in 1927 and the Roy Gustav Cullen Memorial Building, its first building, was opened in 1939. It is a State Research University and is also the third largest University in Texas.
The 12 colleges of the University of Houston offers 109 bachelor's program, 131 master's program, 51 doctoral programs, and three special professional degree programs.
Its Engineering school is called The Cullen College of Engineering at University. The University awards close to 6,500 degrees annually and till now has awarded more than 200,000 degrees.

The main campus, which became its permanent campus in 1936, of University of Houston is located in South-east of the city of Houston. The campus is spread over 667 acres and has buildings designed by renowned architects Philip Johnson and César Pelli.
The main campus also has many green spaces, sculptures and fountains apart from four libraries, Center for Performing arts and a Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
