The University of Pittsburgh offers on-campus accommodation to students and charges approximately $5,500 a year for dormitories.

Most UPitt students, however, prefer to live off-campus and can be found in areas such as North Oakland, Shadyside, and South Oakland. The University of Pittsburgh is located in Pittsburgh in the state of Pennsylvania. The main campus of the university is located in the Oakland area of the city. Much of the campus lies in the historic center of the city known as Schenley Farms National Historic District. The university campus enjoys a classical ambience, thanks to the Greek, Neo Gothic and Renaissance style architecture of buildings within and around.

The campus is encased between the Darragh Street on the west, Bellefield Avenue on the east, Central Avenue on the north and Fifth Avenue on the south. Most of the cultural and recreational hotspots of the Oakland region are within walking distance of the campus.

The main campus is divided into four main parts.

  • The upper zone constitutes the sports complex and residences,
  • The middle and lower zones consist of most of the important department buildings and research facilities besides the administrative offices.
  • The separate west-end of the campus is the site of the medical center.

The city of Pittsburgh is known as the “Steel City” of the US. It is located in a mineral rich region and has a long economic history. It is the leading place in the US for manufacturing glass and aluminum. It is also famous for shipbuilding, petroleum and electronics and Computers and Information Technology. The university is well connected by road and airways. It runs a free shuttle service that connects the campus to the neighbourhoods in Pittsburgh. The nearest airport from the main campus is the Pittsburgh International Airport lying 20 miles north-west from it.
