The university was ranked 18th in a comprehensive study of nearly 1,000 colleges and universities in the United States by Times Higher Education and The Wall Street Journal in 2020. The Shanghai Ranking (ARWU), which places a high value on teacher quality and research output, has consistently lowered USC's ranking from 49th in 2016 to 61st in 2020.
However, it has improved significantly in QS (top universities) international university rankings, moving from 136th place in 2017 to 121st place in 2021. Similarly, USC has risen in THE's global university rankings. In 2016, it was ranked 60th, but by 2021, it had risen to 53rd place.
