Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers separate degree programs in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering. Both programs are similar in many respects but each has its own unique strengths.

1. Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is an ideal choice if you’re interested in structures, fluid mechanics, hydraulics, hydrology, and geotechnical engineering. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers MASc (Thesis Option, Major Paper Option), MEng and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering. The MASc degree is a research-based program of 2 years in which students need to complete four graduate-level courses and a thesis. They will also need an advisor and have to conduct research under the advisor’s supervision.

The MEng Degree may be awarded upon the successful completion of a total of eight courses (MEng has no research component/thesis/work with a faculty supervisor). Of these eight courses, there are five courses which must be from the student's department (major; civil) and the following three required courses: Engineering Technical Communications, Engineering Mathematics and Engineering Project

Management (to be taken in the first or second semester of the program). The Co-op program is optional, and students must apply for admission in their first study term. No funding or scholarships are available. An applicant for admission to graduate studies leading to a PhD degree in Civil engineering must normally be a graduate of a recognized university with a master's degree in applied science (MASc) or the equivalent.

  • 2. Environmental Engineering

    The first environmental engineering degree program in Canada was offered by the University of Windsor. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering under the University of Windsor offers MASc, MEng and PhD degrees in Environmental engineering. The MASc is a research-based program of 2 years in which you complete four graduate-level courses and a thesis. Students will need an advisor who will supervise their research.

    Electrical and Computer Engineering

    The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers a diverse range of exciting opportunities in high-tech industries designing communications systems, computer technologies, electrical power grids, biomedical devices, circuits, electric motors, electronic sensors and many more of technologies and applications which are important in today’s society. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers MASc, MEng and PhD degrees. The MASc is a research-based program of 2 years in which you complete four graduate-level courses and a thesis. Students will need an advisor and will have to conduct research under the advisor’s supervision. Scholarships and graduate assistantships are available through the application.

    Mechanical, Automotive & Materials Engineering

    1. Automotive

    The Department of Mechanical, Automotive and Materials Engineering under the University of Windsor provides International M.A.Sc. in Automotive Engineering/Laurea Magistrale in Automotive Engineering. It is a dual degree program provided by the department with Politecnico di Torino, Italy. The students accepted into this program will start with one year of graduate study in Windsor taking courses and working on a research thesis defined and supported by FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) of North America.

    To complete the master’s degree, students will then have to travel to the Politecnico di Torino and undertake an additional year of study and their thesis research with the support of Fiat again. The medium of instruction for the entire programme is English. The program starts in September and usually spans over two years.

    In addition to that, while earning a Master of Applied Science (MASc) degree from the University of Windsor and a Laurea Magistrale degree from the Politecnico di Torino, the students will have the opportunity to receive solid professional training and practical experience needed to work in a competitive global workspace and in a large multinational automotive company.

    Mechanical Engineering includes two broad areas of study: thermofluids (involving heat and power) and solid mechanics (involving designing mechanical parts, determining the forces on those parts during operation, and analyzing their performance as part of larger machines and systems).

    The department under the University of Windsor offers MASc, MENG in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering (Automotive Option) and the PhD degree in Engineering Materials.

    Computer Science

    The School of Computer Science provides a thesis-based Master of Science in Computer Science. This program endows students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue doctoral studies or a professional career in the rapidly changing computing and technology fields. This is done through course work in the specialized areas of computing technology, applications, and theory, by encouraging participation in research-oriented seminars, and by requiring students to submit an original research thesis.

    Students pursuing the thesis-based Master of Science in Computer Science program may optionally elect Co-operative education to seek employment.

    1. Chemistry and Biochemistry

    The department offers comprehensive programs of study in:

    2. Earth and Environmental Sciences

    The comprehensive, B.Sc. [Environmental Science] and B.E.S.[Environmental Studies] degrees provide an extensive background in all the aspects of environmental science/studies with flexibility in upper years to allow students to prepare for a wide range of careers.
    The School of the Environment offers programs at the Graduate level (M.Sc. and PhD) which are supported by a wide variety of high-quality research facilities.

    3. Forensic Science

    The University of Windsor offers two degrees in Forensic Sciences keeping up with the vast diversity of the Forensic fields :

  • 4. Mathematics and Statistics

    The department offers numerous courses in pure mathematics, applied mathematics (engineering and business), industrial mathematics (operational research), statistics, actuarial science, and numerical analysis. The department offers a wide  range of graduate programmes which are given as follows:

  • list items M.Sc. and PhD in Mathematics - The M.Sc. is designed as a two-year Graduate course and offers algebra, real analysis, complex analysis, numerical analysis, linear and nonlinear functional analysis, algebraic topology, combinatorics, differential geometry, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, probability, statistics, mathematical finance.
  • list items M.Sc. and PhD in Statistics - The M.Sc is a 2-year program. The programme puts emphasis on carrying out Theoretical research and methodological research for substantive areas of application. The topics of study include probability, stochastic processes, queueing theory, multivariate analysis, symmetric functions in statistics, finite sampling, capture-recapture models, majorization and optimal designs, biostatistics, discrete data analysis, outliers, estimating equations, bioassay and robust statistics. The department also offers Professional (M.Act.Sc.) in Actuarial Science.

    The B.Sc. Honours Physics degree program comes in two streams:
