Chemical Engineering

The School of Chemical Engineering is an international leader in chemical engineering education and research. Its project-centred teaching program forms a part of UQ's undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Chemical, Biological, Environmental, Materials, and Metallurgical Engineering, and Sustainable Energy. The undergraduate course offered is The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours). It is a four-year program that will prepare you for a career as an engineer. 

The Master of Engineering is designed to develop your expertise through advanced courses and specialized electives.

The program is a pathway to becoming an accredited engineer and has also been submitted for accreditation by Engineers Australia. The Master of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) is designed to allow chemical engineers take up more senior leadership roles in scoping and tackling the complex, interdisciplinary challenges associated with the design and optimization of industrial-scale processing of raw materials into commercial products. All the students complete a two-semester research project or industry placement as a part of this programme.

    Civil Engineering

    UQ School of Civil Engineering is renowned for teaching and research in water, environmental, geotechnical, structural, fire, and transportation engineering.

    The department offers world-class teaching expertise in the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons), a new Bachelor of Engineering (Hons)/Master of Engineering programme, and postgraduate programs. The research practitioners in the department include expert academics and students from around the world. It provides the industry with consulting expertise, research collaboration, and testing facilities.

    The Master of Engineering (Civil Engineering) provides options for in-depth study in the broad engineering fields of structural, geotechnical, transportation and water and environmental engineering. The program enables students to advance their existing civil engineering skills and knowledge through advanced and practice-focused technical courses which are coupled with experiential learning experiences. Students will also be able to work intensively and directly with academic mentors through a research project in their final year. The master’s program is a two-year programme of full-time study.

    Information Technology and Electrical Engineering

    UQ's School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering is one of the topmost in the country and is at the leading edge of information and communications technology (ICT) and electrical engineering. The School of ITEE recognizes the importance of collaborating with industry for the advancement of teaching and research in the ICT and engineering fields.

    The undergraduate programs offered are: Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Computer Science.

    The Master of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) is designed to combine technical and research skills across biomedical imaging and instrumentation, power and energy systems, or photonics and microwave engineering with a global perspective on professional engineering practice. Students have the flexibility to choose from a range of elective courses and will complete a two-semester research project or industry placement at companies like Allergen, Bayer or Cochlear as part of this program.

  • The master's Programs provide three options for students to choose from:

    The Master of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) is one of the broadest programmes in engineering, covering dynamics and control, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, structures and solid mechanics and design and manufacture.

    The ability to formulate a problem, model and study solutions and identify the most appropriate solution within constraints is core to mechanical engineering processes. This approach is followed across a number of professions and is integrated within the program, thus preparing graduates for a changing world.

    The Master of Engineering Science provides graduates with advanced skills in engineering analysis and problem-solving. This specialization is suitable for those interested in solving advanced technical challenges, managing projects, and overseeing teams. The Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, and Mechatronic Engineering majors of the Master of Engineering Science (Management) add a component of business studies to the engineering science program.

    1. School of Mathematics and Physics

    The disciplines of mathematics, statistics, and physics describe the natural world and underpin a wide range of technological advances. The school has an established international reputation for research excellence. UQ is ranked in the top 45 universities in the world for statistics and operational research. Most of the academic staff are world leaders in their fields. More than 200 peer-reviewed publications are produced every year

  • Master's project work involves an independent investigation of a topic of particular interest under the supervision of one of the faculty members. Master of Data Science has courses in mathematics, statistics, computer science, and other interdisciplinary areas.

    Master of Financial Mathematics is a 2-year program that contains 32 units to be completed by the students. Master of Financial Mathematics is a 1½ year program and consists of 24 units. Master of Quantum Technology is a new 1½ year program.

    2. Chemistry

    UQ has world-class research and teaching in Chemistry. Chemistry at UQ is primarily offered by the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences. The department’s research themes follow the sub-disciplines of organic, inorganic, physical and computational chemistry.

    The two-year Biotechnology master's programs are recognized by the US National Professional Science Master's Association as affiliated Professional Science Master's programs.

    The School of Biological Sciences delivers world-class research and teaching across a broad range of fundamental disciplines in biology.

    It has a stunning range of terrestrial and marine subtropical habitats and their native biodiversity on campus. The research spans the scales of biological organization, from molecules and cells to organisms, species, communities, and populations. The programs and courses include the highly competitive Masters of Conservation Biology/Science degrees and the popular Study Abroad and Incoming Exchange-approved courses in Australian terrestrial and marine science

    The Master of Conservation Biology uses the science of conservation, ecology, and biodiversity to develop strategies and policies that aim to find effective solutions to secure the world's biological diversity. This one-year program provides a comprehensive education in the ecosystems and evolutionary potential of the world's flora and fauna.

    Master of Conservation Science is taught in an intensive mode and is designed around blocks of fieldwork that allow you to complete the equivalent of two academic years in just 18 months. This program helps students to deepen their understanding of all the aspects of biodiversity and conservation, environmental philosophy, national and international conservation policy, and systematic conservation decision-making processes. 

    These streamlined 12- and 18-month master’s degree programs will provide you with comprehensive theoretical, analytical and practical knowledge and real-world application, covering ecology and wildlife conservation, and conservation decision making.

    A diverse and wide range of disciplines is provided by the faculty of UQ health and behavioural sciences. The department comprises of schools from the health, behavioural and social sciences as well as research centers and clinics. Students gain practical experience in providing healthcare and rehabilitation services to the wider community through clinical and non-clinical partnerships.

    The Faculty of Health and behavioural sciences offers a truly immersive and world-class education to a pool of more than 7000 students and over 800 students from foreign countries and, with an alumni network of 50,000 people.

    The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences strives to give knowledge leadership in a wide and diverse range of teaching and graduate programs, including: archaeology, anthropology, arts, history, communication, classics, criminology, cultural studies, history, international relations, drama, journalism, linguistics, literature,languages, media studies, political science, philosophy, music, sociology, and world religions.

    Housing two research-intensive schools, five hospital-based institutes,medical education and centres, the school of medicine is very well capable of linking the clinical and pre-clinical sciences and global health and population. The faculty comprises of teachers and researchers.
