Algonquin College - Overview Background

Algonquin College is located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is a publicly funded English language college. The college was established in the year 1967 with the motto “Your Goals, Your Career, Your College.” Algonquin’s organizational philosophy is defined by its vision, mission and core values. The college offers bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate, diplomas, and college certificate programs in a wide range of disciplines and specialities. The college has been ranked amongst the top 50 research colleges in Canada and has been recognized as one of Canada’s top leaders

The college has three campuses:

  • list items The secondary campuses are located in Perth, Ontario, and Pembroke, Ontario.
  • Major expansion projects have been completed in all three campuses. The Perth and Pembroke Campuses have built new facilities, and the Ottawa Campus now features a new and innovative DARE District and Library.

    Infrastructure

    The infrastructure in all the three campuses of the Algonquin College offers well-equipped teaching and research facilities, student clubs and societies. In 2016, Algonquin College launched a 44.9 million dollar building renovation project which was set to be completed by 2018; this renovation is taking place in the college’s original ‘C’ building which houses most of the administration. The renovation is being done to provide a wide range of collaborative spaces for students, staff, and faculty to grow and learn. 

    Moreover, The Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence was opened towards the end of 2011, which is a 180,000-square foot hall and houses 600 additional construction seats and provides space for thousands of students studying in related programs. Also, opened in fall 2012, the 100,000-square-foot (9,300 m2) expansion of the Pembroke Campus adds more than 300 full-time student spaces.

    Residing Options

    Algonquin College offers on-campus, off-campus, and homestay and short-stay accommodations. There are various types of rooms and facilities to choose from. Many benefits like more university engagement, ball nights, themed activities and other on-campus benefits are available to students who stay on campus. 

    The Woodroffe Campus Residence Complex, opened in 2003, provides housing for 1,050 students. There is also an abundance of off-campus housing in the area. Most students commute throughout the National Capital Region by Ottawa's city transit, OC Transport or by car. Full-time students have a transit pass included in their tuition fees to facilitate their off-campus living and reduce the demand for parking on campus.  There is also a bunch of apartment buildings and rental townhouses near the College called Deerfield where many second-year students live.

    The school's residence is located at a very short distance from Baseline Station where students can take route 94 or route 95 to get to the downtown core.
    Getting involved in residence is easy, whether you enjoy social activities with your friends, help others with academics, be a part of the team by joining in athletics and recreation, or be active in student leadership!

    Financial Aid

    Algonquin College offers various kinds of financial aids! The Financial team of Algonquin College is there to provide its students with support and resources over the course of his/her studies. The various financial aids offered are:

    OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program)

  • list items The Ontario Student Assistance Program offers grants and loans to full-time and part-time students who are enrolled at Algonquin College. Please note that part-time OSAP only covers the cost of tuition, books and day care costs (if applicable). Unlike full-time OSAP, it doesn’t cover living expenses.
  • Bursaries

  • list items A bursary is a monetary assistance or award provided by the institution to the individuals or group of individuals who cannot afford to pay full fees. Generally, in return of bursary, the person is employed at the institution during the bursary. Algonquin College offers fall bursary, winter bursary and spring bursary. 
  • Awards and Scholarships

  • list items The students are felicitated with different kind of awards or scholarships, which are granted on behalf of Algonquin College, the Students’ Association, or any of the external supporters. Scholarships, awards, and prizes (which include plaques, money, medals, or books) are given to the students on the basis of their potential, talent, and outstanding academic records, at various levels like that of a program, area or school.

  • list items Work-Study Program – A student enrolled in Algonquin College can study and work part-time through on-campus opportunities! Algonquin College disburses a portion of its TFSA (Tuition Fee Set Aside) funds under the College Student Employment Program (CSEP).  Each year, Algonquin College departments have an opportunity to request funding for CSEP employment opportunities since the institute recognizes that there is a high demand by students in financial need for employment opportunities on campus.

    Algonquin College offers supportive and dedicated careers and employability services for the students. It advises the students to plan their career from the first year and slowly advance towards it in the upcoming years, define career goals and work towards achieving them. It also offers career counselling and dedicated career staff to guide and support the students.

    The statistics reflect that 90% of the graduates have jobs within six months of graduation. Moreover, 92% of employers are happy with the quality of Algonquin College programs.
    The Job Connect/Employment services on the Pembroke and Perth Campuses placed 800 young people in Jobs. The employment rates for the session 2016-17 being 86.6%.

    Algonquin in Ottawa

    Algonquin College is placed in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada).The college is basically situated just minutes away from hundreds of kilometers of bike, recreational pathways, parks and natural areas. Ottawa is a native place to the Rideau Canal which is also known as the Rideau Waterways. It connects Ontario to the lake Ontario and the Saint Lawrence River at Ontario.

    The Rideau Canal is a ‘UNESCO World Heritage Site,’ and is a very popular destination known for various refreshment activities such as summer boating and winter skating. Algonquin is placed in the vicinity of many cultural and urban amenities, including museums, prime shopping amenities, sports, athletics, and a wide range of restaurants.

    Algonquin is on a transit hub which students or employees use to travel across Ottawa. The most affordable manner to get to Algonquin College from the Ottawa Airport is to go via a vehicle ride (at a minimal fare) and takes a period of around 13-15 minutes. The road distance between the college and Ottawa Airport is 11.8 kilometres. One can even travel through the bus route to the college which takes around one hour to reach.

    Algonquin in Pembroke

    Algonquin College in Pembroke is situated in the valley of Ottawa. Pembroke is interconnected to Algonquin Provincial Park and linked to forests, waterways, and natural areas. Pembroke is a very famous destination and is known for various activities including whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing, boating, and hiking.

    Pembroke is home to Canada’s largest outdoor art gallery and is officially registered as Hockeytown Canada. The campus is located around 140 km, northwest of downtown Ottawa. The road journey from Ottawa to the college is approximately 1.5 hours, and around 2.5 hours drive from Toronto. 

    Algonquin in Perth

    Algonquin College Heritage Institute’s campus is located just one hour from Ottawa in the prehistoric town of Perth.  Perth is only a distance away from provincial and municipal parks and the Tay River for summer and winter activities.
