Chemical Engineering

The Department of Chemical Engineering attempts to fuse challenges in the energy, food, health and environment sectors to train students how to tackle them both theoretically as well as pragmatically. It offers B.Eng, B.Eng. Biosciences, B.Eng. Management and B.Eng. Society in its undergraduate program, while its graduate program includes M.A.Sc and PhD degrees. The M.A.Sc program requires a minimum of three one-term courses along with a thesis which should be defended in an oral examination.

The duration of the course is six terms full-time. The Phd program requires six half-courses along with a comprehensive examination and oral examination for a defence of the thesis.

The department contains the following research facilities: The Polymer Processing Group, McMaster Advanced Control Consortium, The McMaster Centre for Pulp and Paper Technology and The McMaster Nuclear Reactor.

  • The department has a total of 22 full-time faculty who are the recipients of
  • Bernard S. Baker Student Award,
  • Electrochemical Society Canadian Section Student Award,
  • Canadian Association of Graduate Studies Distinguished Dissertation Award

and fellowships such as Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship, 4 x Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology Fellowship and have also been published in various international journals.

Its key areas of specialization include: Bioengineering, Polymer Materials and Manufacturing stream, Process Systems Engineering stream and Water-Energy Technologies stream. 

Civil Engineering 

The Department of Civil Engineering offers B.Eng, B.Eng.BME, B.Eng. Management, B.Eng. Society in its undergraduate program, while its graduate program includes M.A.Sc, M.Eng and PhD degrees. The M.A.Sc program is a one- to two-year course which is thesis-based and requires half graduate-level courses along with a  presentation and defence of a thesis. The M.Eng is a part-time program which requires 6 half graduate-level courses along with a presentation.

The PhD course is for a minimum of four years requiring 4 half courses along with a comprehensive examination and an oral examination for the defence of thesis. The department contains the following research facilities: Applied Dynamics Laboratory, Geotechnical Engineering and Construction Materials Laboratory and Water and Environmental Engineering Laboratories.

The department has a total of 28 full-time working faculty who are the recipients of Early Researcher Award and John B. Scalzi Research Award and have authored several books. Many of them have publications to their name in prestigious journals. Its key areas of specialization include Intelligent Energy Systems, Resilient Infrastructure Systems, Smarter Mobility and  Water Security under Climate Change.

Computing and Software

The Department of Computing and Software Engineering attempts to advance economic growth in a digital society.

It offers:

  • BA.Sc
  • B.Eng in Mechatronics and Software Engineering
  • B.Eng.BME in Mechatronics and Biomedical Engineering
  • B.Eng.BME in Software and Biomedical Engineering
  • B.Eng. Management in Mechatronics and Software Engineering
  • B.Eng. Society in Mechatronics
  • oftware Engineering in its undergraduate program.

Its graduate program includes:

  • M.A.Sc
  • M.Eng in computing and software engineering
  • M.Eng in Computer Science
  • Mechatronics, Software Engineering
  • Virtual Systems Design
  • M.Sc in computer science and eHealth
  • PhD in Computer Science and Software engineering.

The M.A.Sc program is a two-year course which requires a minimum of four graduate courses and the successful defence of a thesis. MEng is a two-year course which requires a minimum of six half graduate courses. M.Sc. is a two-year interdisciplinary program fusing two or more research areas together. The PhD course is for a minimum of four years requiring 4 half courses along with a comprehensive examination and  oral examination for the defence of thesis.

The department has a total of 21 full-time working faculty who are the recipients of Ontario Early Researcher Award, IBM Centre for Advanced Studies Faculty Fellow, “Ten Year Most Influential Paper" Award, US National Science Foundation CAREER Award and have been published in sundry eminent journals.

  • Scientific Computing and Optimization
  • Security, Privacy, and Data Analytics,
  • Software Quality and  Theory 
  • Methodologies of Computation. 

Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering covers areas such as design, maintenance, manufacturing and analysis within the larger ambit of mechanical systems. It offers BEng,  BEng Management, BEng Society in its undergraduate program, while its graduate program includes MASc and PhD. Its MASc program requires four half courses along with a thesis and is a two-year full-time course which can also be pursued on a part-time basis.

The PhD program is for a minimum of four years course which requires either two half-courses beyond the Master’s degree or six half-courses belonging to Bachelor’s degree along with a comprehensive exam and an oral examination to defend the thesis. The department has a total of 25 full-time working faculty who are the recipients of the 2004 President's Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision, Outstanding Paper Award, Co-recipient, Chrysler Innovation Award, Innovator of Distinction Award, to name a few. Many of them have authored books and publications in eminent journals.

Material Science and Engineering

The Department of Material Science and Engineering puts  emphasis on the properties and characterization of the latest materials. It offers BEng, BEng.BME, BEng. Management,  BEng Society in its undergraduate program, while its graduate program includes MASc, MSc and PhD. Its MASc and MSc program requires 4 half graduate-level courses along with a presentation and a defence of the thesis.  

The PhD program is for a minimum of four years and requires 4 half courses beyond the Master’s degree along with a comprehensive examination and defence of the thesis. The department consists of The Centre for Automotive Materials and Corrosion and Steel Research Centre. The department has a total of 17 full-time working faculty who are the recipients of Charles Allan Thompson Summer Research Award,

Dean’s Scholar recognition and Dean’s Award, Ontario Graduate Fellowship - McMaster Prestige Award, Early Researcher Award among many others and have been published in internationally recognized universities.

Physics 

The Department of Engineering Physics tackles the emerging challenges in the field of technologies by incorporating the innovation of effective materials, devices, systems in the learning experience. It offers BEng, BEng.BME, BEng. Management,  BEng Society in its undergraduate program,

while its graduate program includes:  MASc, M.Eng in Engineering Physics and Nuclear Engineering and PhD.

Its MASc program requires a minimum of three half-courses with an average grade of B and a thesis.

Students are also required to take a mandatory seminar half course. MEng UNENE Nuclear Engineering is a part-time course-based program consisting of ten half courses. The MEng course in Engineering Physics is a full-time 16-month course which requires a minimum of eight half courses. The PhD degree is a thesis-based program which is for a minimum of four years and requires two-half courses along with a comprehensive examination and defence of the thesis.

The department consists of facilities such as:  Biomedical Sensors centre, Biophotonics Lab, Nano- and Micro-Devices Lab, Nuclear Safety Labs, Organic Electronic Interfaces Laboratory, Photovoltaics Labs and Silicon Photonics Labs.

The department has a total of 19 full-time working faculty who are the recipients of Sawamura Award and Guimaraise Award of ISIJ, MSU Teaching Awards, Best Young Researcher Award among many others along with publications and conference presentations to their name in the said field.

The department’s key areas of expertise include:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Interdisciplinary Engineering
  • Nanotechnology and Micro-Systems Engineering,
  • Nuclear Engineering and Energy Systems
  • Photonics Engineering and Smart Systems. 

Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers BEng, BEng.BME, BEng. Management,  BEng Society in its undergraduate program, while its graduate program includes MASc, M.Eng in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Electrical and Biomedical Engineering and a PhD degree.

Its MASc is for a minimum of 1.5 years when attended full-time. It requires four graduate half-courses along with a thesis and attendance of a mandatory seminar. The MEng course-based program is of  1.5-year duration. Those pursuing MEng in Electrical and Biomedical area require six graduate half-courses along with a project. Those pursuing an MEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering require a minimum of seven graduate half-courses.

The PhD degree is a thesis-based program for a minimum of four years which requires four-half courses along with a comprehensive examination and defence of the thesis. The department has a total of 35 full-time working faculty who are the recipients of

  • Overseas Academic Masters Scholar Award
  • Canada R.A. Fessenden Silver Medal Award
  • Technology Achievement Award from the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce
