Brief background:

Northwestern University, also called as NWU is a private research University, which was founded in 1851. Almost all its undergraduate programs are amongst the most selective in the United States. The University also has some highly ranked graduate and professional schools such as Kellogg School of Management, Feinberg School of Medicine, Pritzker School of Law, and Medill School of Journalism. Its engineering school, the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, offers 15 full-time master’s degree programs and four part-time master’s programs for students to choose from.

The campus of NWU, spread across 379 acres, is divided into two parts. The first campus is the Evanston campus and the second campus is the Chicago campus. Both the campuses are 12 miles apart. Engineering students go to the Evanston campus while students headed to the law school, medical school, School of Professional Studies, and part-time MBA program go to the Chicago campus.

Both the campuses are dotted with buildings that are built with different architectural styles and have state-of-the-art facilities. The library system of the University has more than 5 million volumes. The campus also has excellent recreation centers, aquatics center, and athletic centers.

Residing Options:

Though NWU offers on-campus accommodation to its students, a large percentage of graduate students prefer off-campus accommodation as it offers them greater privacy and luxury. Most students prefer living at Chicago Avenue and Clark Street and pay $500 per month for it.

Faculty and pedagogy:

NWU has very good faculty – all of whom are dedicated to teaching and ready to help out students.

Financial aid:

Being a private University, NWU does not have many financial aid options. They do offer a few scholarships and getting them is purely based on merit and academics.

Jobs and placements:

In the long run, graduating from this university seems to pay off well. It is ranked in the top 10 percent of universities on the basis of return on investment. Let us now go through the approximate average salaries across different levels in the corporate ladder - a data scientist earns an average of $94,052, a software engineer earns an average of $90,287, while a mechanical engineer earns an average of $73,796. The top recruiters include International Business Machines (IBM) Corp.($74,497 - $162,090), Abbott Laboratories ($70,203 - $122,000), The Boeing Company ($74,924 - $94,007), J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (JPMCC) ($47,315 - $96,650). The most popular job profiles amongst the university alumni include Data Scientist, Software Engineer, Data Analyst, Project Manager, Marketing Manager, Marketing Director, Mechanical Engineer. The average salary for the pass outs is $80k. Master of Science (MS) graduates make between $49,820 - $110,575.

Founder of Booz Allen Hamilton James L.Allen & Edwin G.Booz, Former Chairman and CEO of Lehman Brothers Peter George Peterson, and Writer of The Game of Thrones series of books George R.R.Martin are some of the famous alumni from here.

The Kellogg School of Management of this University is very good and the management school is also much sought after.

Northwestern University is located in the Evanston area of North Shore Chicago. It is easily accessible from O'Hare (33-minute car ride) airport. The Midway airport is almost 1hr 15 min car ride. The campus is on the CTA Purple Line and is close to the Davis, Foster and Noyes stops. The Metra frequently services the route to Evanston from Chicago and the northern suburbs on the Union Pacific/North Line. There are a few bus services also connect the campus with the city.
On the weekends, you may visit the Baha'i Temple – one of the seven Baha'i temples in the world. You can also visit the Lakefill to catch breathtaking views of the skyline from this campus lakeside property. It is also a great place for studying, picnicking, jogging and biking.
There are also quite a large number of places to hang out at with an assortment of cafes, restaurants and bars. Some of the major ones are Coffee Lab, Unicorn Café and Peeled – a juice bar.
