Brief Introduction

The Southern Cross University was established in 1994 with campuses at Lismore and Coffs Harbour in northern New South Wales and at the southern end of the Gold Coast in Queensland. 

The campus at Lismore includes a science and engineering precinct, environmental laboratories, contemporary music and visual arts studios and the SCU Health Clinic. The Gold Coast campus has specialist teaching facilities for nursing and midwifery and allied health disciplines such as occupational therapy, podiatry, pedorthics and speech pathology. The Coffs

Harbour campus has specialist nursing laboratories, a biosciences laboratory, and psychology research facilities. 

The Southern Cross University also runs the National Marine Science Centre (NMSC) in Coffs Harbour along with The Hotel School Sydney and The Hotel School Melbourne in partnership with Mulpha Australia.

Infrastructure

A range of research facilities are available in the Southern Cross University like Analytical Research Laboratory Southern Cross Plant Science, Aquaculture and Hatchery, Environmental Analysis Laboratory, Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing Laboratory, Scanning Electron Microscopy Laboratory.

Accommodation

If you are considering on-campus accommodation, SCU Village is your only option. SCU Villages provides you with fully furnished apartments, easy transportation options, and unique residential life programs.   

4 bedroom apartments start from $200.50 in Coffs Harbour. The Lismore campus has rooms starting from $178.50 and ranging upto $200.50.

Jobs and Placements

There are graduate programs available which offer opportunities for training with Australia’s top organizations, and hence, can prove to be very beneficial. To find out about local and international job vacancies, you can go on CareerHub which is SCU’s online employment vacancies site. SCU also organizes The Big Meet which is a career fair where you can interact with employers directly. As per the official reports released by the university, graduates of the business school enter the accounting, finance, marketing, advertising, public relations, investment and human resource management industries, among others. 

Location

To arrive at the Gold Coast campus, you can take a flight to the Gold Coast Airport, from where the university manages a free pick up. If you are arriving via Brisbane International Airport, you can use the Pacific Motorway or AirTrain to reach Gold Coast. You can either drive from Sydney, or take a flight. 

To reach the Lismore campus, you are recommended to fly to Sydney and then take a domestic flight to Lismore.   Premier Motor Service and countrylink have buses and trains respectively running from Central Railway Station, Sydney. But you are advised to use the Airport Link Train.

If you are coming from Brisbane, Byron Easy Bus and Premier motor service offer bus services there.

To reach the Coff Harbour campus, you can fly to the Coff Harbour airport, from where a University staff can pick you up. There are flights available from Sydney to Coff Harbour. Greyhound Australia and Premier Motor Service also provide bus services from Sydney and Brisbane. You can also use the NSW Train Link.  

School of Environment, Science and Engineering

The school focuses on innovative ideas regarding global warming, salinity, sustainable agriculture and forestry. It keeps itself involved in research by maintaining links with research groups like  Centre for Coastal Biogeochemistry Research, Marine Ecology Research Centre and the Forest Research Centre. The marine students also get access to the  National Marine Science Centre at Coffs Harbour. The school also provides its students with hands-on learning in living laboratories provided by World Heritage rainforests, subtropical forests and coastal and marine ecosystems. 

  • Faculty - The department has 11 academic staff, 3 professional staff and 1 casual academic staff who are enthusiastic in helping you reach your true potential.  
  • Research - Some of the major research areas under this department are Energy harvesting and renewable and sustainable energy resources, Structural health monitoring, non-destructive evaluation, assessment, repair and rehabilitation of civil infrastructure; Smart materials, concrete technology and geopolymer concrete development, Chemistry of natural and engineered aquatic systems; Numerical modelling of biogeochemical processes in natural and engineered environments, Artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms and particle swarm optimisation modelling, etc.

Engineering

The Engineering department started in 2013, as a part of the School of Environment, Science and Engineering. It offers various undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Coastal Systems Engineering

Postgraduate Level - 

  • Master of Engineering Management (MEM) - It is a 16-month long course. The major topics covered under this course are accounting and economics, leading teams and project management. You can choose a combination of subjects that are related to your interests and professional needs. 
  • Master of Engineering Management, Master of Business Administration (MEM, MBA) - It is a 2-year full-time course. The course involves strategic infrastructure asset management, stakeholder engagement, engineering for a sustainable future, project management, and leadership and management.

1. SCU College

If you are an international student, SCU college offers English Language programs to help students develop the required proficiency in English. 

2. School of Arts and Social Sciences

The school focuses on arts and humanities, social sciences and creative and performing arts. Studies in visual arts, media and contemporary music are held in the Lismore campus. Students are also provided with access to studios, performance and exhibition spaces.  

3. School of Education

The school of Education works tirelessly to build the skills of a capable and successful educator in its students. The school has also been credited in the Australian Research Council’s Engagement and Impact Assessment 2018-2019 National Report which rated its research impact as high. 

4. Gnibi College of Indigenous Australian Peoples 

They provide Indigenous courses based on the principles of social justice, cultural integrity, inclusion and social justice through education. The degrees are delivered both on-campus and online.

5. School of Health and Human Sciences

The school focuses on biomedical science, pedorthics, nursing, clinical exercise physiology, and healthcare leadership. It also offers modern laboratories and specialist facilities to train their students to become better scientists, researchers or creative practitioners.

6. School of Law and Justice

The courses offered by the school revolve around the rule of law, the highest standards of ethical conduct, professional responsibility and community engagement. The faculty members try to create a friendly and supportive environment to create better lawyers and paralegals.  

7. National Marine Science Centre 

It is a part of the School of Environment, Science and Engineering and is located in Coffs Harbour. It focuses on research aimed at addressing issues related to the resilience of marine ecosystems and resources. The courses help you to gain career opportunities in marine science and management in Australia, as well as overseas.
