Stony Brook University was started in 1957. A public research University, it is one of the most reputed schools in the United States. This University is included in the 62 top research institutions across North America and gets $182.7 million in annual sponsored research. The university also has 1,866 active research projects. It offers graduate degree programs in arts and sciences, business, engineering, and health professions. It also offers a wide variety of master’s programs, 44 doctoral programs and a number of certificate programs too. 10 of these programs were ranked in the top 50 by U.S. News and World Report in 2014.
Infrastructure:
The campus of the University is located 90 kilometers from New York, on the North Shore on Long Island. The campus, spread across 1100 acres, is divided into three parts – East, West and South and is extremely beautiful. The campus has two main libraries which have stocked over a million volumes. Other facilities in the campus include The University Café, a few cafeterias etc.
Residing Options:
The University offers on-campus accommodation and charges $6,000 a year for it. Most of the graduate students, however, choose to live off-campus as it allows them more freedom and privacy. Popular areas for off-campus student accommodation are Centereach, Port Jefferson, East Setauket, and Selden and students end up paying $1,200 every month for it.

Location
Stony Brook University is located in Stony Brook, New York. It is nearly 15 miles away from MacArthur Airport. After exiting the airport, take a turn to the left onto Veterans Memorial Highway Route(West). Join Route 27, Sunrise Highway and take an exit on the second Nicolls Road to drive 12 miles towards the north and finally reach the entrance of university which is on the left side. If one wishes to travel by car, one needs to take the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan or the Throgs Neck Bridge or Whitestone Bridge in Queens to exit 62, and follow Nicolls Road (Route 97) north for 9 miles. The main entrance to the University is on the left. To reach the university by train, take the Long Island Railroad's Port Jefferson line from Penn Station in Manhattan to Stony Brook. The LIRR station is at the north end of the campus; bus service to the central campus is provided. Car ferries cross Long Island Sound at Bridgeport, Connecticut to Port Jefferson, Long Island. Take Route 25A west to Nicolls Road, and turn left on Nicolls.

All the AGC (Advanced Graduate Certificate) courses provided by the College of Business are scheduled in the evening as part-time programs designed for working professionals. Several of them are offered completely online. It also offers a Master of Science in Finance Degree. This program is highly selective and focused meant for finance professionals who want to further develop their finance skills as well as for students from other disciplines who seek to strengthen their financial expertise. The program requires students to complete 30 credits (10 classes) in the finance area. Students will also be required to submit a finance industry-based project during their stay in the course.
The college also offers an MBA in Finance program.

Materials Science

The broad curriculum offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering lays emphasis on various areas such as Design and Manufacturing, Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Energy Conversion and Power Generation, and MEMS. Stony Brook University offers Masters of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programs under the guidance of expert professors.
