The founders of the university are Alexander Cameron Rutherford, is first premier, and Henry Marshall Tory, its first president. The university falls in the top 5 Canadian universities and top 100 universities all over the world.

Infrastructure

Some of the infrastructural and research facilities provided by the university include:

  • NanoFAB
  • The Oil Sands Tailings Research Facility.
  • The Peter S. Allen Magnetic Resonance Research Centre.

In 2016, the university received $82.5 million to fund its infrastructure from the federal and provincial governments. The funding was given with the aim to improve the quality and scale of its 10 innovation and research facilities. The university also boasts of a library with a staggering collection of articles, ejournals, and articles.

Residence

The university also offers comfortable on-campus residence options for students. Lister residence allows students to access facilities like dining halls, recreation with flatmates,  and tutors. The Peter Lougheed Hall is located on the edge of Edmonton's river valley and is a first-year residence. It also has programs to encourage academic achievements and social connections. .

The Saint Jean residents nurture their French community located on Campus Saint-Jean. The RSJ residents are new undergraduates who want a positive immersion experience.

Financial Aid

Some sources of financial aid provided by the university to the students are:

  • Undergraduate scholarships
  • Entrance scholarships
  • Bursaries
  • Emergency funding
  • student loans.
  • Money talks: financial literacy

Location

The university harbours campuses in Edmonton, the Augustana Campus in Camrose and a staff centre in downtown Calgary. The original north campus of the university consists of 150 buildings which cover 50 city blocks on the south rim of the North Saskatchewan River valley, directly across from downtown Edmonton.

The university has five distributed campuses including, apart from the North Campus, two auxiliary satellites: Campus Saint-Jean in southeast Edmonton, and Augustana Campus in Camrose. The Hudson's Bay department store in downtown Edmonton, renamed Enterprise Square, acts as a campus for adult students from the Faculty of Extension. The Edmonton International Airport is approximately 25km away from the University of Alberta North Campus. Light Rail Transit Trains arrive every 15 minutes during the day and every 5-10 minutes at peak hours. Most bus routes run every 15 or 30 minutes, depending on the time of day and season.
