Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has been a leader in fire science for over 40 years. It offers one of the few graduate programs in fire protection engineering. In this interdisciplinary program, you will study advanced topics in fire protection and safety. You will also develop the critical thinking skills needed to lead in research, policy, education, and other areas.
You can pursue your master's degree in fire protection engineering online, either part-time or full-time, or attend classes in person. Every student at WPI benefits from one-on-one mentorship and practical learning experiences that are key to the WPI education.
The curriculum focuses on the basics of engineering, science, and math, while also including fire safety topics related to human behavior, business, management, and public policy. You will gain hands-on experience with the latest fire protection and safety technology.
Both thesis and non-thesis options are available. Part-time and full-time students can also join our internship program, which connects students with sponsors from around the world.

Graduation
Applicants for the Master of Science or certificate programs need a Bachelor of Science in engineering, engineering technology, or physical sciences. Some students may need to take extra undergraduate courses to strengthen their background. These courses must be finished in the first year of the program before taking advanced courses. Applicants should have completed courses in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and calculus (up to differential equations) with a grade of B or better from an accredited institution. Those with both a National Diploma and a Higher National Diploma can also apply. A completed undergraduate degree from an accredited institution is needed before starting any graduate programs at WPI. All graduate students must have their undergraduate degree completed by the time they enroll.
