After adding living and various other expenses, you can expect to spend around $60,000 a year on your US education. This is where assistantships come to rescue you from the pit of debt. Graduate assistantships are defined as academic employment in which students get tuition reimbursement for the work they do for the faculty members, department, and college. You can expect to work almost 20 hours a week in exchange for a small remuneration and tuition waiver. The tuition waiver can be 50% or full, depending on the institute. Assistantships not only provide a stable source of income, but they are also a good addition to your resume and work experience. How many types of assistantships are there? There are basically three types of assistantships. They are as follows - Teaching Assistantship (TA) Research Assistantship (RA) Graduate Assistantship (GA)/Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) What is Teaching Assistantship (TA)? In the simplest of terms, a TA is a teaching assistant to a professor. Branch Selection – All the branches of SBI have now started processing study abroad loans, but there are a few who are experts; We start the process at one of these expert branches. Limited Branch Visits – Usually students have to visit the branch 6-7 times during the loan process. We limit the branch visits to 1 only –for physical ID. Documentation, especially property docs – Most of the cases rejected by PSUs are because of the non-availability of property documents. GyanDhan works with the student, PSU, and property lawyers to ensure availability of those documents, and advise to work-around. If there is no way to get the document, we don’t start the process and try to arrange another property or explore financing from other lenders. Pre-Visa Disbursement- Though PSBs have the policy to disburse money pre-visa for a few countries, but branches usually don’t practice the same. With him coming to the office, loads of hopes will rise in the hearts of pandemic-hit civilization that became crestfallen due to the factors such as the depreciating world economy, increasing fundamentalism, worldwide diplomatic tussles, etc. Donald Trump's populist and non-inclusive policies, especially the H1B Visa Ban, has demoralized many study abroad aspirants who want to study in America and make it big in their careers. For Indians looking to work and study in the US, the foremost question with this new government is how their fortunes would be changed? Would Biden serve their interest better? Biden’s pre-election interviews and speeches definitely give international students hope of a brighter tomorrow, but with several other issues in hand, international students might not be at the top of the list of priorities of Biden. He would definitely take an action in the support of international students in the future, as his past statements suggest, but an overnight change would be too optimistic to expect from him. Biden is famous for being a left-liberal and will be tempted to upend all of Trump’s policies. It would be rational to assume that his immediate preoccupation would be the coronavirus pandemic and when he will get it under control, he might go on and turn his attention to other substantive policy areas. At present, things are not in the cards to look up in the near future for current and potential international students. At the same time, it is imperative to know that there is bipartisan support for the India-US relationship, which has achieved a more robust and substantive trajectory that systematically embraces multiple verticals. It suggests that we could see softening from the US administration in order to accommodate Indian concerns. But all this will take a certain time, perhaps a couple of years.
