How to Calculate SGPA: Calculations Simplified

    Updated on: 12 Sep 2023

SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average or Sessional Grade Point Average. It calculates the total scores and credits at the end of the term or session. It is the average of all grade points secured in all examinations during one semester.

    How to Calculate SGPA?

Calculating SGPA is an easy task and would hardly take any time.

    1.  Make a list of all your credit points & grades for each subject.
    2.  For each subject, multiply the credit points by your grade. (Grades cover a range, so you can take the median of the grades.)
    3.  Add all of the results together.
    4. You need to divide your total score by the sum of all the credit points you earned.
    5.  As a result, you get the SGPA.

Now, let's understand how to calculate overall SGPA with an example.

The formula to calculate SGPA is:
SGPA = Points secured in the semester/Credits secured in the semester

    For example:

Step 1: Make a list of all your credit points & grades for each subject.

    Credit Score

    Grades

    Subject A - 4

    Subject A - 9

    Subject B - 2

    Subject B - 8.8

    Subject C - 3

    Subject C - 8

    Subject D - 2

    Subject D - 7

Step 2: Multiply the credit points for each subject by the grade you obtained in the respective subject.

    Subject A - 4 x 9 = 36
    Subject B - 2 x 8.8 = 17.6
    Subject C - 3 x 8 = 24
    Subject D - 2  x 7 = 14

Step 3: Add all of the results together.

    Subject A + Subject B + Subject C + Subject D= 36+17.6+24+14 = 91.6

Step 4: You need to divide your total score by the sum of all the credit points you earned.

SGPA formula = Points secured in the semester / Credits secured in the semester

Points secured in the semester = 91.6
    Credits secured in the semester (add all the credits from the individual subjects) = 4  +2 + 3 + 2 = 11

    SGPA = 91.6 / 11 = 8.32

Step 5: As a result, you get the SGPA.

    SGPA = 8.32

How to calculate the percentage by SGPA?

Sometimes universities ask for a percentage score as well. No worries, the following steps will guide you to convert your SGPA score to a percentage.

    1. In the first step, calculate your SGPA for all semesters.
    2.  Once you have the SGPA's for each semester, add them all up.
    3.  Add the SGPAs and divide the number of semesters.
    4.  Convert your SGPA into a percentage by multiplying it by 10 and subtracting 7.5 from the result, which will give you the percentage.

    [(SGPA * 10) - 7.5 = Percentage]

How do you calculate CGPA from SGPA?

Now that we know how to calculate SGPA, it's time to learn how to calculate CGPA.

Let's see the formula to convert SGPA to CGPA.

CGPA = (sum of all semester SGPAs in an academic year) divided by the number of semesters

For example, if you have an 8 SGPA in the 1st semester and a 7 SGPA in the 2nd semester, the CGPA for your first year will be:

CGPA = [First Semester SGPA + Second Semester SGPA] Divided by the number of semesters

               = (8+7)/2

              = 7.5 CGPA

Now that we know how to calculate the SPGA, these are some of the important points one should keep in mind while calculating SGPA.
