California State University (CSU) requires first-time freshman applicants to finish a specific set of college preparatory courses totaling 15 units with grades of C- or better. This includes: 2 years of social science (1 year of U.S. history or U.S. history and government), 4 years of English, 3 years of math (algebra, geometry, and intermediate algebra; 4 years are recommended), 2 years of laboratory science (1 biological and 1 physical, both with lab instruction), 2 years of the same foreign language (waiver possible for those with equivalent skills), 1 year of visual and performing arts from one discipline (art, dance, drama/theater, or music), and 1 year of electives from approved subjects.
