To be eligible for admission as a first-year student, all applicants must be high school graduates or have an equivalent qualification. Non-California residents can qualify by having a GPA of 3.00 or higher in the "a-g" subjects. If their GPA is between 2.5 and 2.99, they may still be considered based on additional factors called the Multi-Factor Admission Score. The following subjects are required: - **History and Social Science**: 1 year of U.S. history or 1 semester of U.S. history and 1 semester of civics or American government, plus 1 year of social science. - **English**: 4 years of college preparatory English composition and literature. - **Math**: 4 years of college preparatory math, including algebra, geometry, and intermediate algebra. - **Laboratory Science**: 2 years of college preparatory science with lab work (1 biological and 1 physical). - **Language Other Than English**: 2 years or through the second level of high school in the same language; American Sign Language and classical languages like Latin and Greek are accepted. - **Visual and Performing Arts**: 1 year or 2 semesters from the same discipline, including dance, music, theatre, visual arts, or interdisciplinary arts. - **College Preparatory Elective**: 1 additional year chosen from the University of California "a-g" list.
