Students must have passed high school. They need to complete these minimum courses: 4 years of their native language, 3 years of mathematics (which includes beginning algebra, geometry, and advanced algebra), 3 years of science (with 2 years in biology, chemistry, or physics), and 2 years of social studies (3 years for those applying to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences). Students applying for majors in the Liberal Arts and Engineering must have 2 years of a foreign language (English can count if it is not their first language). The minimum GPA required is B or 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. This translates to: General Scale: 50%, India School Certificate: 6 on a 1-9 scale, CBSE/CCE: B2 on an A1 to E2 scale, and National Institute for Open Schooling SSSE: 61 out of 100, D on a scale of A to I, or Good. Admission decisions can be based on transcripts from the last 3 years of high school, along with other necessary documents. Students must achieve the Higher Secondary Certificate or its equivalent and submit all official transcripts showing they have finished high school, including Board Exam results for grades X and XII, before they can enroll at Iowa State University.
