This program helps you work well with students from different cultural and language backgrounds, including those learning English, both in the United States and in other countries.
The English language learner programs offer classes on how people learn a second language, methods for teaching English, and how to use this knowledge in learning other subjects.
Students will learn about the structure, meaning, and context of language. They will also learn how to create effective teaching plans and assessments. We will look at important social and cultural factors that affect teaching and learning for diverse students.
At the end of the program, students will be able to:
Apply knowledge of language and how people learn it.
Understand the best practices for teaching language.
Assess reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
Consider social and emotional factors that affect English language learners.
Evaluate students' social and academic language skills, as well as their learning in different subjects.
12th Grade
There is no specific cutoff mentioned for 12th grade.
Graduation
Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree before starting the M.A.T. program. They should have a major related to the teaching subject or show they have equivalent knowledge. A passing score on the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) is required, but applicants can still apply if they have not taken the MTEL yet. More details about the tests will be given during a meeting with the program advisor.
