Sonoma State University (SSU) was established in 1960 as part of the California State College System. The university welcomed its first class of 250 students in 1961 and became a university in 1978. In 1962, SSU introduced its first four-year degree program. In 2001, the university expanded by acquiring an additional 48 acres of land in Copeland Creek. The campus now covers 269 acres and is recognized as the 34th most beautiful college campus in the United States. SSU has six schools that offer programs across 65 departments, including the School of Arts and Humanities, School of Business and Economics, School of Education, School of Science and Technology, School of Extended and International Education, and School of Social Sciences.

SSU is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. The university is known for its unique wine business program and courses in viticulture, thanks to its location near vineyards.
