Overview

Sonoma State University (SSU) was established in 1960 as part of the California State College System. The university welcomed its first class of 250 students in 1961 and became a university in 1978. In 1962, SSU introduced its first four-year degree program. In 2001, the university expanded by acquiring an additional 48 acres of land in Copeland Creek. The campus now covers 269 acres and is recognized as the 34th most beautiful college campus in the United States. SSU has six schools that offer programs across 65 departments, including the School of Arts and Humanities, School of Business and Economics, School of Education, School of Science and Technology, School of Extended and International Education, and School of Social Sciences.

SSU is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. The university is known for its unique wine business program and courses in viticulture, thanks to its location near vineyards. Various programs have specific accreditations from organizations such as the American Chemical Society and the National Association of Schools of Music. Programs in education are approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

The university has a student population of 9,408, with 91% being undergraduates. SSU employs 606 faculty members and 899 staff members. The campus is vibrant with cultural activities, including seminars and workshops. About 90% of freshmen and 37% of undergraduate students live on campus. Additionally, 64% of students receive some form of financial aid, and the university awards approximately $1.1 million in scholarships every year. Around 2,000 students graduate from SSU each year. The student body is diverse, with 63% female and 37% male students. Princeton Review has recognized SSU for its impressive dormitory facilities. Notable alumni include David V. Brewer, a justice of the Oregon Supreme Court, and Nancy Silverton, a well-known chef and author.
