The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley offers two options for the Master of Science (MS) in Physics: a thesis option and a non-thesis option. Students must choose one of these options when they apply.

To complete the program, students need to earn 30 semester credit hours.

All students accepted into the program must create a degree plan with the help of the graduate committee, which must be approved by the department chair.

This degree plan will consider the student’s previous education and their future goals.

The plan will include a timeline that outlines the courses students need to take to finish the program successfully.

Students' progress will be checked against this degree plan at the end of each semester.

If any changes to the degree plan are necessary, they must be agreed upon by the student and the graduate committee, and then approved by the department chair. These changes will take effect at the end of each semester.

Graduation

To be admitted to the graduate physics program, candidates must meet the requirements for graduate admission. This includes having a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the U.S. or an equivalent international degree in a similar field. Candidates need an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0. Those with a 4-year bachelor's degree, a 3-year bachelor's degree plus a master's, or a 3-year bachelor's degree plus a post-graduate diploma can also apply.

The installment plan allows for four payments:

• The next three payments are due on the first business day of each month after the semester starts.

This plan is available only during fall and spring semesters and does not cover any past unpaid balances.

A $30 (non-refundable) service charge fee is added with the first installment.

Any credits (like financial aid) will first go towards unpaid balances.

If extra charges are added to the student account after the first installment, they will be split evenly across the installments.

A $5 late fee will be charged if payment is not received by the due date, and an additional $25 if payment is not received three days after the due date.
