Master of Science (M.S.) Physics at University of South Dakota

Step One: Prepare Your Documents

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

Applicants must submit a statement of purpose. This document should explain how your background, skills, and goals connect to your desire to study in the Physics Graduate Program at USD. You should also discuss how your past research experience has prepared you for success in this program.

In your SOP, provide details about your research area, the methods you used, and the results you achieved. Explain how these experiences relate to your academic and career goals and how they align with the research and learning opportunities at USD.

Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

You need to submit three letters of recommendation. At least one letter must come from your current school. The person writing the letter should explain why they believe you will succeed in the USD Physics Graduate Program based on your past work and potential for growth.

The letter should cover your research experience, your level of involvement, and the skills you have gained. The writer should give their personal opinion on how your skills will help you do well in the program.

Step Two: Additional Documents Required

• Official transcripts showing your undergraduate degree and any previous graduate courses (in English or translated).
• Proof of English language proficiency.
• A copy of your valid passport. Include the page with your photo, date of birth, passport number, expiration date, and any signature.
