What are the benefits of the Black, Arab and Mature Students Bursary?

The Black, Arab and Mature students bursary grants a financial aid which covers the tuition fee of the students.

  • list items The bursary is worth INR 52,390 and is only available for the first year of study in 2024-25. Payment will be made in one lump sum in February 2025 via bank transfer. You must open a UK bank account, and they will contact you via email prior to each payment date to request that you enter your bank account information into My Essex so that payment can be made.
  • list items To receive payment, students must be registered and meet the above criteria. If you withdraw from your course, you may be entitled to a pro-rata payment of the remainder of your award when you return to study, at the discretion of the University. 
  • list items Please keep in mind that if our records show that you are in debt to the University at the time an award payment is due, the payment will be applied to your student account first, and you will be entitled to any remaining balance.

    What is the eligibility criteria for the Black, Arab and Mature Students Bursary? 

    To be eligible for the Black, Arab and Mature students bursary, students need to check the eligibility criteria for the same before applying for the bursary.

  • list items These scholarships are only available to students who are completely self-sufficient*. 
  • list items Students must be of Black or Arab ethnic origin or be mature undergraduate students (students who begin their undergraduate degree at the age of 21 or over). 
  • list items The award is available to students who have previously completed their undergraduate studies at the University of Essex and are starting an eligible postgraduate Masters course in academic year 2024-25. This is true whether you are progressing directly or after a break in your studies.
  • list items Students must enroll in a full-time or part-time postgraduate Masters course at the University of Essex in October 2024 or January 2025, leading to the degree of MA, MSc, MBA, LLM, MFA, MAPH, or MRes.
  • list items Students who are chosen should be available for promotional activities.
  • *Students who receive a repaid loan to fund their studies are considered self-funded. This includes, but is not limited to, tuition fee loans from the following organizations:

    - Student Loans in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland 

    - Scottish Student Awards Agency 

    - Federal Direct Loans in the United States

    - Finland's Social Insurance Institution (KELA) - Denmark's State Educational Grant and Loan Scheme.

    What is the application process for the Black, Arab and Mature Students Bursary?

    If you meet all of the eligibility requirements, you will be considered for this award automatically. You are not required to fill out an application form. The University will determine your eligibility based on the information you provide when you register for your course.
