Overview

Bridgewater State University (BSU) is a public university located in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, with additional campuses in Attleboro, Cape Cod, and New Bedford. The university is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). Established in 1840, BSU offers a large campus covering 278 acres.

BSU features six academic colleges that provide 36 undergraduate majors and over 60 graduate degree and certificate programs. The Honors Program at BSU includes nearly 500 students who focus on academic success, personal goals, social justice, and leadership. This program helps students develop important skills such as teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and time management.

Every year, more than 500 students participate in paid internships through the Bridgewater State University Foundation. These internships allow students to gain work experience, explore different careers, and earn academic credit while often receiving a paycheck. The Internship Program Office supports students in gaining practical experience and networking in their fields.

BSU has a well-regarded Undergraduate Research program that offers funding and opportunities for students across all majors. This program allows undergraduates to conduct research and contribute to their fields or communities. Students work closely with faculty on projects that matter to them, gaining valuable skills in critical thinking and communication.

Currently, BSU enrolls around 10,881 students, including 9,463 undergraduates and 1,418 graduate students. The average class size is 22 students, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 18:1. The university also provides over 1,000 study abroad programs in more than 50 countries. Approximately 41% of full-time undergraduate students live on campus, which includes 11 residence halls and one student apartment.

The Academic Achievement Center (AAC) offers various services to help students succeed academically. The Learning Assistance Program provides free tutoring in writing, math, communications, and English as a second language. If students struggle with a course, the AAC staff helps them improve their critical thinking skills and build confidence.

BSU participates in numerous federal, state, institutional, and private financial aid programs. These programs fall into three categories: Grants/Gift Aid, Work-Study, and Loans. Students receive an award letter after their FAFSA is processed and financial aid is awarded based on eligibility.

Notable alumni from BSU include Stephen Canessa, a former member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Robert Correia, a former Mayor of Fall River, and Jeff Corwin, a well-known actor and conservationist. Other successful graduates include Christopher Dijak, a professional wrestler signed to WWE's developmental brand NXT.
