Overview

Chicago State University (CSU) was founded in 1867 as the Cook County Normal School by John F. Eberhart. It started as a teacher's college in Blue Island and moved to Englewood in 1869. The school became part of the Chicago Board of Education and was renamed Chicago Normal School in 1897. In 1913, it became Chicago Normal College, and several new buildings were added to the campus. In 1938, it was renamed Chicago Teachers College (CTC). In 1950, Northeastern Illinois University was created as a branch of CTC, and the State of Illinois began funding CTC in 1951. In 1967, it changed its name to Chicago State College and finally became Chicago State University in 1971. Located in Chicago, Illinois, CSU's campus features many modern buildings with top-notch facilities. The Emil and Patricia A. Jones Convocation Center is a large arena that can hold 7,000 people, hosting sports, conferences, concerts, and more. The Jacoby Dickens Center on campus includes a gym with 2,500 seats, a fitness center, three swimming pools, eight locker rooms, a dance studio, three classrooms, and an auxiliary gymnasium. This center also houses the university's athletic department and the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) department. The campus also boasts a large library with advanced automated systems, as well as excellent housing and dining options. CSU offers 56 degree programs across various fields, including business, education, health science, pharmacy, arts, sciences, design, psychology, computer science, mathematics, social work, languages, engineering, communication, and philosophy. The university has a diverse student body, with students from 20 counties in Illinois, 38 U.S. states, and 12 countries worldwide. The student-to-faculty ratio is impressive at 12:1, promoting effective learning. More than 80 student organizations are available, and the placement cell works hard to provide students with great job opportunities. On average, graduates earn around $44,000 annually, with companies like Walgreens, AT&T, and Advocate Health Care frequently hiring CSU students. CSU has produced many notable alumni, including Martin Ridge, a historian known for co-authoring a significant book on American history. Margaret Taylor-Burroughs was a talented artist and poet who co-founded the DuSable Museum of African American History. Mamie Till was a Civil Rights activist, while William D. Alexander gained fame as a film producer. RM Johnson is a successful author recognized by Essence magazine's bestsellers list. Many other prominent individuals have also graduated from CSU.
