Howard Payne University (HPU) is a well-respected private university located in Brownwood, Texas. Founded in 1889 as Howard Payne College, it became a university in 1974. HPU is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The university is also a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III for sports.

The campus is beautifully set near the downtown area of Brownwood and covers 80 acres. It includes over 45 buildings, green spaces, and parking areas. The facilities are modern and well-equipped, featuring high-tech laboratories, smart classrooms, and spacious lecture halls. Students can also enjoy various recreational options and support services on campus.

Nearly all new students live in the university's housing. HPU offers several dining choices where students can enjoy healthy meals. Additionally, the campus has a Food and Essentials Pantry to support students' basic needs. Other amenities include a chapel, wellness center, counseling office, and a mailroom. The university also provides a shuttle service and runs two extension campuses in El Paso and New Braunfels.

HPU offers a variety of academic programs, including four graduate degrees and over 100 undergraduate majors and minors. The university hosts around 1,171 students from different countries, with a balanced gender ratio. Classes are small, averaging 14 students, allowing for personalized attention. HPU also supports a vibrant athletic program with teams in several sports, and it is part of the American Southwest Conference.

HPU has a strong alumni network that includes many distinguished individuals. Notable alumni include Coffey Anderson, a singer-songwriter, and Kenneth Sanders, a football defender. Others include businessman Jim Reese and Grammy Award-winning gospel singer Cynthia Clawson. These alumni have made significant contributions in their fields and continue to inspire current students.
