Overview

Howard Payne University (HPU) is a well-respected private university located in Brownwood, Texas. Founded in 1889 as Howard Payne College, it became a university in 1974. HPU is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The university is also a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III for sports.

The campus is beautifully set near the downtown area of Brownwood and covers 80 acres. It includes over 45 buildings, green spaces, and parking areas. The university hosts around 1,171 students from different countries, with a balanced gender ratio. Classes are small, averaging 14 students, allowing for personalized attention. HPU also supports a vibrant athletic program with teams in several sports, and it is part of the American Southwest Conference.

HPU has a strong alumni network that includes many distinguished individuals. Notable alumni include Coffey Anderson, a singer-songwriter, and Kenneth Sanders, a football defender. Others include businessman Jim Reese and Grammy Award-winning gospel singer Cynthia Clawson.
