Keck Graduate Institute, established in 1997, is a private graduate university located in Claremont, California. Founded by Henry Riggs, it is the newest and seventh member of the Claremont Consortium. The university is under the leadership of President Sheldon Schuster and is named after the W.M. Keck Foundation, which provided a significant endowment of $50 million. In 2002, it awarded its first Master of Bioscience degree, and Henry Riggs served as its first president until 2003.
The university has appointed Jay Mario Molina as the Dean of its new School of Medicine. It offers various innovative certificates and graduate degrees in fields such as Genetics, Health Sciences, Pharmacy, and Business. The programs emphasize teamwork, practical industry experience, and real-world projects. The Minerva Schools at Keck Graduate Institute, in partnership with the Minerva project, offers a four-year undergraduate course. Additionally, the university has accredited Master of Science programs in Genetic Counseling and Human Genetics through the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling.
Academically, the university is divided into three schools: the School of Medicine, the School of Applied Sciences, and the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. It hosts four research centers: the Bioprocessing Centre, the Centre for Rare Disease Therapies, the Science Heritage Centre, and the Centre for Biomarker Research. In 2000, it created Ionian Technologies, the first spin-off company to commercialize technology from the university, focusing on molecular diagnostics for infectious diseases. In 2004, the university received a contract to develop a handheld biothreat detector using DNA amplification techniques. Other startups from the university include Claremont BioSolutions and Zuydar Pharmaceuticals.
