Overview

La Sierra University was established in 1922 when the Southeastern California Conference acquired 300 acres of land. This land was part of a Mexican land grant called Rancho La Sierra, which inspired the university's name. Initially, it opened as La Sierra Academy and changed names several times, becoming Southern California Junior College in 1927. In 1967, it merged with Loma Linda University and became known as the College of Arts and Sciences. Eventually, in 1990, it was renamed La Sierra University.

The university's campus is situated in La Sierra, covering 150 acres close to Riverside, California. It is a member of the American Public Gardens Association, and its campus is recognized as an arboretum, which is a botanical collection of trees. The campus originally had separate dormitories for male and female students. In 2006, La Sierra University opened a $23 million science complex that includes departments for computer science, mathematics, and biology. Additionally, the Frances E. Barnard Memorial Observatory, featuring a telescope, is located at the base of Mount Two-Bit behind the university.

La Sierra University offers around 50 undergraduate degrees and 23 pre-professional programs. Undergraduate degrees include fields such as Accounting, Biology, Communication, Criminal Justice, Music, Psychology, and many more. Pre-professional programs are available in areas like Pre-Engineering, Dental Hygiene, Pharmacy, and Pre-Law.

For graduate studies, programs are offered through the School of Education, College of Arts and Sciences, H.M.S. Divinity School, and Tom and VI Zapara School of Business. The School of Education provides courses in Teaching, Counseling, and Educational Psychology. The Divinity School offers studies in Theological Studies and Ministry. The School of Business covers topics like Accounting, Finance, and Marketing. La Sierra also provides various programs such as Honors programs, English as a Second Language, and Online Programs.
