La Sierra University was established in 1922 when the Southeastern California Conference acquired 300 acres of land. This land was part of a Mexican land grant called Rancho La Sierra, which inspired the university's name. Initially, it opened as La Sierra Academy and changed names several times, becoming Southern California Junior College in 1927. In 1967, it merged with Loma Linda University and became known as the College of Arts and Sciences. Eventually, in 1990, it was renamed La Sierra University.
