Overview
Morgan State University (MSU) was established in 1867 with the goal of educating young people about important ideas. Over time, its mission grew to include both men and women. In 1890, the school was renamed Morgan College to honor Reverend Lyttleton Morgan, who was the first president of its board and donated land for the school. In 1895, Morgan awarded its first bachelor's degree to George F. McMechen, who later became a significant political figure and supporter of the university. In 1939, the State of Maryland took over the academy to provide more opportunities for Black residents in the state.
From the beginning, Morgan has welcomed students of all backgrounds. By the time it became a public university, Morgan was already a strong institution. The university offers a range of programs, including bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Currently, Morgan has over 7,698 students enrolled. Recently, there has been a focus on urban education, which is reflected in its graduate programs. Morgan offers various master's degrees in fields such as Arts, Business Management, Science, Education, Philosophy, Engineering, and Public Health.
MSU has a favorable student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1, ensuring that students receive personal attention from their professors. This small class size helps maintain high-quality education. Morgan State University also aims to help students facing financial difficulties by providing financial aid. These awards are available to current students based on specific requirements and academic performance.
The university offers scholarships to incoming students who have high SAT scores and strong high school grades. Additionally, there are athletic scholarships available for selected athletes on intercollegiate teams. ROTC Military scholarships in the U.S. cover tuition, lab fees, and books, along with a monthly allowance of $100.
The student body at Morgan State University is diverse, with 71% Black students, 23% from other ethnic backgrounds, and 4% Hispanic students. The university has a mix of in-state and out-of-state students, with 52% coming from outside Maryland and 47% from within the state. Most students, about 89%, are 24 years old or younger.
Morgan State University offers several popular programs, including MBA, M.Arch, MEng, MS, and MIM. These programs require standardized tests such as IELTS and TOEFL for admission. The application process is straightforward, with no application fees and regular deadlines.
Located at 1700 East Cold Spring Lane, Baltimore, Maryland, MSU is easily accessible. Students can expect a vibrant campus life and various resources to support their academic journey. Morgan State University is committed to providing quality education and opportunities for all students.
