Overview

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, established in 1963, is a private medical school located in Manhattan, New York City. It is part of the Mount Sinai Health System, which operates eight hospitals in the New York area. This school is known as one of the best medical schools in the United States. The first class started in 1968, and since then, the school has earned a great reputation for its research labs.

Originally, the school was called the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. It became an independent institution in 2010 and changed its name to the Icahn School of Medicine in 2012. The school is closely linked with the Mount Sinai Health System and produces a journal on Translational and Personalized Medicine every two months.

The campus includes various departments and centers focused on medical research. Some key areas of study are neuroscience, dermatology, environmental medicine, public health, pharmacological sciences, and microbiology. These departments are well-equipped and offer a wealth of knowledge.

The curriculum is divided into two parts: the first two years focus on medical sciences, while the later years concentrate on clinical sciences. The school also offers an early admission program called the Humanities and Medicine Program (HuMeds), which allows students to apply without taking the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).

Students have opportunities for hands-on learning through visits to medical centers, with over eight hospital campuses available. The faculty is experienced, and the university has around 600 MD students and 90 Ph.D. students. Some courses are offered in partnership with organizations like ACCME, LCME, CEPH, and ACGME.

The Icahn School of Medicine emphasizes high-quality education, patient care, research, and community service, which are central to its mission. Most students participate in community service activities.

Notable alumni include Stuart A. Aaronson, a cancer biologist; Jacob M. Appel, a novelist; Thomas C. Chalmers, who developed meta-analysis; and Kenneth L. Davis, the CEO of Sinai Medical Center.
