Rush University was established as Rush Medical College in 1837 by the Illinois state legislature. The founder, Daniel Brainard, was a well-known scientist and surgeon, and this school became the first medical school in Chicago. It was named after Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a respected physician. In 1972, it became a university after merging with several other institutions and was given its current name. The first president was James A. Campbell. Today, Rush University serves as the academic wing of Rush University Medical Center (RUMC) and consists of four colleges. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE), and many of its programs have received approval from various organizations.
