Salisbury University was established in 1925, beginning as a response to a need for teachers in rural Maryland. In 1921, research showed that the existing education system was not meeting the demand for educators in these areas. To address this, the Maryland Legislature created a new two-year college for elementary teachers located on the East Shore. The State Normal School opened its doors on September 7, 1925, with just 105 students, led by Dr. William J. Holloway, the first chancellor.
