Overview
Texas Southern University (TSU) was founded on September 14, 1927, as Houston Colored Junior College. It aimed to provide college education for African-Americans. The university gained approval from the Southern Association of Colleges in 1931 and became a four-year college in 1934, named Houston College for Negroes. In 1946, it was renamed Texas State University for Negroes, and finally, on June 1, 1951, it became Texas Southern University. TSU now has 11 schools and colleges and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
Located in Houston, Texas, the TSU campus covers 150 acres and includes 45 buildings. These buildings house three professional schools, a performance theater, and a music recital hall known for its great sound quality. The campus also features a radio station, a health and physical education complex with an arena for 7,200 people, dormitories, and various recreational facilities. The Robert James Terry Library can hold over 1,000 people and has more than 349,969 microfilms and 452,850 books. Students can join over 80 student organizations and participate in activities like yoga, soccer, basketball, and volleyball.
TSU offers more than 100 undergraduate, graduate, and online degree programs in diverse fields such as business, public affairs, education, science, engineering, arts, and computer science. The university serves over 9,200 students and employs more than 1,400 staff members. While 83% of students are from Texas, about 7% come from countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Nigeria, Kuwait, and the Bahamas. TSU also has a career center that helps students with job placements and organizes career fairs with visiting companies.
The university has a large alumni network that includes successful professionals like educators, public servants, entrepreneurs, and artists. Some notable alumni include Michael Strahan and Ernie Holmes, famous football players, and Yolanda Adams, a well-known gospel singer. Kenneth M. Hoyt is a Senior United States District Judge, while Jennifer Holliday is a Grammy-winning singer. Barbara Jordan was an influential lawyer and politician, and George "Mickey" Leland served as a U.S. congressman.
