Robert S McNamara Fellowships are given to students seeking a master's degree in economics or a doctorate in development economics. This fellowship is a component of the World Bank's Robert S. McNamara Fellowship Programme (RSMFP), which began in 1982. A decision of the World Bank's Executive Directors formed RSMFP. This program was created to improve the engagement of aspiring development economists in global policymaking. For an eight-month term in Washington, DC, the selected fellows are taught by the world's most distinguished thinkers.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this fellowship award, applicants must meet the following eligibility conditions at the time of application:

  • list items Citizens of a developing country that is a World Bank member, such as India, Bangladesh, or China but you need to keep in mind that you DO NOT HAVE DOUBLE CITIZENSHIP IN A DEVELOPING COUNTRY.
  • list items On the application due date, you must be under the age of 35.
  • list items A World Bank member who is enrolled in a Ph.D. program and residing in a developing member country.
  • list items Completed the prerequisite coursework and exams for admission to a Ph.D. program.
  • list items The PhD thesis should be focused on development.
  • list items NOT a member of the World Bank group's staff or linked to any member of the World Bank group's staff.

    Application Process

    All those applicants who meet the eligibility criteria can access the online application form when the fellowship body releases the call for applications. Before submitting an application, applicants need to check that they meet the eligibility requirements.

  • list items The first thing is to obtain the approval of a Host Institution Research Advisor as well as the Ph.D. Thesis Supervisor.
  • list items Then you need to collect any necessary documentation.
  • list items After that, draft a research proposal for the Fellowship period in the format of the section on "Proposed Research for RSMFP Funding" on the Application Form.
  • list items Once the proposal is drafted, prepare a research budget for this fellowship period of no more than INR 20,81,435 using the budget template available on the RSMFP website.
  • list items Post that, share and discuss the potential host institution's research proposal and budget for RSMFP funding with the Research Advisor and Ph.D. Thesis Supervisor.
  • list items Then you need to confirm with the research adviser at the host institution the resources he/she and the host institution will be able to give free of charge.
  • list items Confirm that the recommenders are willing to fill out the Recommendation Form.
  • list items In the end, fill out the Recommendation Request Form online and submit it.
  • list items Fill out and submit the online application form in English.

    Documents Required

    The application for the Robert S. McNamara Fellowship Program must be completed by the specified cutoff date and must include the following documents:

  • list items You need to check that your RSMFP application form is completed.
  • list items After that, you need to sign the agreement to the RSMFP's terms and conditions.
  • list items You will need one letter of recommendation from the research advisor of the hosting university and one letter of recommendation from the Ph.D. thesis supervisor at the hosting university.
  • You must upload all required documentation electronically. If any document is supplied via email, postal service, or any other method, the applicant's form will not be examined.

  • Fellowships will be given based on the quality of the application materials, knowledge of relevant economic methods, and demonstrated proficiency in the appropriate statistical software. Cohort creation will strive for geographic and gender diversity.
