GRE COVID Update
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the world to a crashing halt, and people worldwide have to adapt to the new normal. GRE centers are no exception to it, and there have been changes to make the test compatible with local rules and regulations. GRE centers in India have also witnessed certain changes which have to be kept in mind before taking the test. These changes are expected to remain for a while now, and ETS has also clarified that these new regulations will remain in place as long as the conditions warrant. Any further change in this regard will only be done by consulting the governments of respective countries. So, for now, every student has to adhere to these new regulations, and they must keep a note of them to avoid any last-minute trouble.
The new regulations are valid for all the GRE test locations, and they are as follows:
- Students must bring a mask and should wear it all the time, irrespective of the GRE center where they are taking the test.
- Medical mask and cloth face coverings are allowed, while masks with valves or vents aren’t permitted at GRE centers in India.
- Students have to remove the mask at the time of ID verification and return from breaks.
- All the GRE test centers in India are sanitized at regular intervals, and students will be provided with wipes to clean the high-touch surfaces.
In Case of Rescheduling
There are several instances where the tests are postponed in the wake of the rising number of cases. In case of postponement of the test, students will be communicated about the same. Students should regularly check their email and ETS accounts to get updates on the rescheduling of the test.
Following changes can be done on the ETS website:
- If you feel the GRE center near me is not suitable, you can change the GRE test center appointment to another convenient location.
- GRE test location can be changed to a home appointment if you have apprehensions about getting infected or any other reason.
Test appointments can be rescheduled in case of health concerns.
It is always advised to choose a location wherein you have less travel time since the spread of infection increases in case of traveling from one place to another. In the midst of a pandemic, it is safe to choose a location where you can reach easily, and if possible, it is better to use a personal vehicle to reach the test center. Last year ETS made amends to the exam structure to make it compatible with the new normal by providing the option of taking the test from home. In case you have the risk of getting infected and don’t want to go to GRE test locations, the choice for taking the test from home is made available by the ETS. In the new system, the health and safety of test-takers are taken care of by the ETS, thus providing the option of taking the test from home.
GRE General Test at Home
The new testing system developed by the ETS takes into account the compulsion of the governments and test-takers. The new system was introduced last year to incorporate social distancing and other infection reduction practices so that the health of test-takers and test center staff is not affected due to the GRE test. In the “Test at home” option, students don’t have to expose themselves to the risk of infection. A conducive test environment can be created without jeopardizing the sanctity of the exam.
Since some GRE exam centers in India and other parts of the world have been closed for a while now, students are choosing the “test at home” option. In the new system, a student will have to take the test from a computer at their home, and a human proctor will be monitoring the whole process with the use of artificial intelligence. The “test at home” option is available in India, and it also includes a special provision for students with disabilities. Facilities like color magnification and extended test time and break times are made available in the “test at home” option.
The notification on the Subject tests is yet to be released. Amid the grim condition of the pandemic in India, it is not possible for ETS to take the exam at this point in time. Those students planning to take the Subject test will have to wait till the time conditions become conducive to take the test. This will require the local government’s approval, and then only ETS can move forward to allow GRE test centers in India to start operating. There have been queries on whether ETS will take the Subject tests from home, but there has been no confirmation in this regard. Once official information is released, we will update the page with the list of GRE test locations approved by ETS for taking the Subject test.
Things To Bring To GRE Test Center
Students should follow the rules and regulations laid out by ETS for every GRE test center. These rules should be followed in every case, and it is applicable at every GRE exam center in India. However, there are certain differences in the rules for General Test and Subject Test.
For General Test:
The ID brought by the test taker should have the same first and last name as filled in the application form.
If there is any discrepancy, a student may be asked to provide a supplementary ID. So you should have at least two valid IDs with you so that the administrator can confirm your identity and allow you to take the test.
If a student hasn’t brought valid ID proof, his seat isn’t deemed to be held in case he/she leaves the GRE test center.
For Subject Test:
Same as the General Test. The only additional thing is sharpened HB pencils and erasers.
