  • Check the microphone before the start of the test.

  • In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is advised to wear a mask or a face cover to avoid the spread of infection.

Since the world is grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, there are severe restrictions in place to contain the spread of the virus. The TOEFL test centers in India and around the globe aren’t operating in full swing. TOEFL test locations update is subject to clearance from local authorities, and ETS is also operating in sync with governments. There are many cities where TOEFL test centers are operating in limited numbers, affecting the availability of TOEFL centers in India. The test centers are closed for months now, and students are communicated about the new available test date. Students wanting to take admission abroad are searching about TOEFL centers near me, and the response so far is limited since ETS is not getting clearance on operating in full swing.

As per the part of the corrective measure, ETS has decided to keep the test centers closed for as long as they aren’t getting clearance. Even those TOEFL centers that are working have limited test-taking capability, and they are working at reduced strengths. The TOEFL test centers have to reduce the available booking slots to ensure less rush on test centers. The test centers have been asked by authorities to allow fewer students so that there are minimal chances of the spread of infection. To ensure that these test centers don’t become hotspots, ETS has taken a plethora of precautionary measures. The test center is regularly cleaned, and frequently touched surfaces are regularly sanitized to ward off any chances of the spread of infection. Test takers are also provided with cleaning wipes to sanitize the testing area. Sanitizers are placed at regular intervals at test centers to ensure full cleanliness. Students have to mandatorily wear a face mask or a face cover as per the instructions released by governments. ETS ensures that every safety measure is put in place to contain the spread of the virus at TOEFL test locations in India.

ETS has revamped its system to ensure that those students whose test was affected by lockdown or, for that matter, any other reason, can easily reschedule the test. Students have been given the utmost freedom to choose any TOEFL exam centers in India as per their convenience to take the test. The rescheduling charges that were earlier charged at $60 are waived for now, so students don’t get penalized due to the lockdowns. The rescheduling links are sent to students so that they can change the test date and centers at their convenience. Those students wanting to opt-out of the exam due to unforeseen reasons are given a full refund of the test fee. Students can visit the account section on the ETS website and reschedule the test date and TOEFL center.

The score delivery mechanism remains the same, and students will be getting their TOEFL scores within six days of taking the test. ETS has ensured that test scores reach the students in a limited timeframe so that they can send the same to universities where they seek to take admission. ETS has revamped its system to ensure that the pandemic doesn’t take a toll on students’ academics. Since there are many universities abroad that have started functioning, students might not have physically gone there due to local and international travel restrictions. In the case of electronic score reporting it is taking approximately six days or slightly more to send the score report. While those students take the test at home, the score is usually sent between six to ten days. In the case of Paper Score Reporting, it depends on the local courier services, and it varies in every country

Since the bookstores in most parts of the country remain closed, ETS has taken the initiative to provide free resources to students. The free resources can be accessed from the official ETS website. ETS has launched the following initiative to help students with their test preparation:

  • TOEFL Practice Online (TPO) test to help those students located in countries with strict lockdowns where there are large-scale cancellations.
  • TOEFL Test Preparations: The Insiders Guide is a six-week online course. This course has quizzes, videos, and expert guidance to ramp up the preparation level.
  • TOEFL iBT Free Practice Test provides unlimited access to full-length tests with a ton of previous year questions.
  • TOEFL iBT Test Prep Planner is an eight-week test planner to help students plan their preparation in a comprehensive manner.

Apart from the initiative mentioned above, ETS has a new test format for students who want to take the test from their home. The new test format has a similar registration process, and students can take the test from their home while a proctor monitors the test taker. The new format uses artificial intelligence to conduct the test. The test dates are available four times a week. Students can take the test at any time of the day. This new system is going to be in place even after the TOEFL test centers in India start operating in full swing. With all the new changes, ETS has placed a full-fledged system to cope up with the new normal. TOEFL exam center in India will start opening slowly. Till then, ETS is making regular amends to help students in these tough times.

Things To Bring at TOEFL Test Centers

Certain things are strictly prohibited at TOEFL test centers, and candidates should bear this into mind before taking the test. The only thing which a candidate needs to bring is two valid IDs. The test administrator will check the IDs at the time of entry. Other things like pen, pencil and scratch paper will be provided at the test center itself. Test takers aren’t allowed to bring any eatables or drinks. They can bring water in a transparent bottle, and nothing else is allowed inside the TOEFL center.

One needs to strictly follow these instructions since any violation can have serious consequences. Conducting the test in a free and fair manner is the top mandate of ETS, and it does so to ensure a level playing field for everyone.
